What have I set up wrong?

At the bottom of every pages is a place for a visitor to leave a reply, every page that is

      except the only

    page I want it on.

Is there a way to change this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Check that you have comments enabled for that page. If comments are enabled the box should appear. Go to Pages ->All Pages and click on Quick Edit under the page title. Make sure the box to allow comments is checked. You can also enable comments via the discussion module inside the post/page editor: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Thank you very much for the help, seems discussion module is hidden by default so your link was an absolute necessity.

Seems to have been active on all pages, however on the blog page there is a “leave comment” option that must be clicked first, unlike the other pages (almost need to be looking for it).

This brings about a new set of questions, like a captcha option before commenting on the page, but I will search for those answers first.

    Thanks again for your help

Your main posts feed does not contain a comment reply box, no. You have to click through to the single-post view to be able to comment.

I’ll save you the trouble of searching. There is no CAPTCHA option on WordPress.com. What you can do is to activate comment moderation either for first-time commenters or all comments, and you can also require commenters to be logged in or at least provide an email address when commenting. Those are our two main tools for controlling comments and limiting spam. More information here:

Unless you use P2, a twitter-like theme comments are collapsed on the front page of the blog. The way the comments function is coded into the core of WordPress and cannot be changed by WordPress.com bloggers. As kokkeih said by clicking the post title or the comments link on the posts on the front page the posts open on their own page where all comments display.

In a new blog one does not have many posts or comments. In an established blog if the comments did not collapse on the front page it would become a mile long in no time flat and page loading time is a page ranking factor. We have only seconds before visitors refuse to wait and click out.

Thanks timethief, I turned off comments on all pages except the “blog” (projects) page. I want a clean and fast loading “front” (Home) page and who needs comments on their policies.

I am new to this so I guess it is learn as I go. I was hoping to just make a copy to my desktop and play with it without making 200 changes to a live version, but not looking like that is possible.

Just about happy with it now anyway, a few more CSS tweaks and then start adding some real content.
