AddThis Blog Post Social Bookmarking Buttons

I would love to see AddThis Blog Post Social Bookmarking Buttons (or a some sort of WP.com-like surrogate of it) as a standard feature in WP.com templates!
See AddThis here: http://www.addthis.com/blog-item-button.php
How about that, Matt?

there’s a bit of a thread going about social bookmarking:
http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=4714&replies=33.addthis seems to add an unnecessary step to bookmarking, and doesn’t really help people who don’t already know about social bookmarking sites, but it does look a lot cleaner.
-
I tried adding the AddThis code, but enough of it got stripped out that it was useless. That’s a pity. On the other hand, there is the point that those into social bookmarking probably already have their browsers set up to add the current web page, and that who aren’t probably won’t click on the AddThis button anyway.
I recount my adventures in AddThis at:
http://changingway.org/2007/03/05/addthis-here/ -
The advantage of AddThis seems to be to integrate all of these services together. WordPress.com really needs a social bookmarking feature and this could be an easy way to accommodate many people’s needs at the same time.

For the last month or so I have been using Keotags as well as the Add This button. This is because with the Add This button your readers have to complete the url for the blog article being bookmarked but with Keotags the blogger does this in advance http://www.keotag.com/sociable.php
The blogger supplies the url to the article and the tile. The code is generated and can be readily copied and pasted into the article. Keotags also has tag search and a tag generator. I suggest that you try Keotags and see what you think. -
for the record, AddThis does not require users to complete form fileds manually for normal (self- or not wp.com hosted) blogs.
as in effect AddThis button auto{program}maticaly grabs a *permalink* and a *title* from the post to be bookmarked using a tiny javascript code piece which is eventually stripped by wp.com.
that is exactly how all so called ‘bookmarklets’ work, including ‘Press This’ link on the blue wpcom adminbar (former ‘Press It‘ which used to be into .com admin panel before), whose JS code is executed by the browser on the client side.

frankly, I just failed to dig it out of the gate what Keotag actually does useful — it looks more like another tags aggregator (sort of Technorati).
my guess both AddThis, Keotag (and other similar services) are *currently* redundant (i.e. useless) due to lack of a support from a wpcom back-end side such as existing ‘Digg This’ button for instance.
IMO, as Adam already noted in the thread mentioned above, the best bet would be incorporating a native WordPress plugin by Alex King called ‘Share This’ which does what its name suggests very nicely, instead of a linking to an intermediate third-party service.

Thanks for answering. Several wordpress.org blogs I do visit regularly have “Share this” I like it and I’d like to see it introduced here.

I’ve created an AddThis Sidebar Widget to include AddThis buttons in your sidebar. It includes either/both of the “subscribe” and “bookmark” buttons. I’m not sure if those on wordpress.com can add widgets, but those using wordpres on their own host can at least give it a shot.

Afraid not. Removed link so not to confuse folks. You need to be over at http://wordpress.org as that’s the software site. May want to upload it to the Plugin directory as well so that folks can find it.

Hi, I am new to addthis buttons. What I would like to know is how the buttons work; is the feed button related to bookmark button. If you put the bookmark button on your website or blog, is it necessary to add the feed button. You can simply just copy and paste the codes of the buttons direclty on to your site or blog? If you get it wrong, can you undone it? How does the links on http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php related to it, and how the links get up there on the page? Sorry, really very confused about this, hope someone out can help. Thank you.

The AddThis buttons don’t really work from what I can tell – despite good placement on my sites they have the lowest click-rate of virtually anything on it. I think a much better one is ROMlet which can be found at http://romlet.com … basically, this engages readers, showing them statistics, helping them bookmark your site and letting them know where their vote is going to count the most. AddThis simply presents too many options and people are used to seein that same static button everywhere.

Last I checked there was a working pre-beta draft of the widget on http://WebUrbanist.com – it shows where recent visitors came from rather than making readers guess where to go to vote the site up. It also points readers to the posts that are currently popular.

Unfortunately the romlet selection is very limited eg. I would only use reedit and stumble.
P.S. The code for the AddThis button is found here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=9051
