AddThis Problem

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi–
    I am new here, but checked the FAQs/Forum first. The topics for my problem were closed, but I tried the code in there and it createst he same problem I will describe below:

    If you can help me, it will be necessary to give me the *exact* HTML code, since I don’t know anything about it, although I am trying to learn :)

    I’m trying to add “AddThis” bar. I can’t figure out how to put a screen print in here, so here’s the word description: It put the bar out there, but above the bar (that works) is always this: var addthis_config = { username: “LewisFaulkner”} My user name on AddThis is LewisFaulkner. Except for this displayed oddball line of HTML code, it works fine.

    Here is the HTML code I added into a sidebar widget in “Text” widget:
    <!– ADDTHIS BUTTON BEGIN –><script type=”text/javascript”>var addthis_config = { username: “LewisFaulkner”}</script><img src=”http://s7.addthis.com/static/btn/v2/lg-share-en.gif” width=”125″ height=”16″ border=”0″ alt=”Share” /><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js”></script><!– ADDTHIS BUTTON END –>

    Any help would be wonderful!

    Thanks

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Novelnovels,

    You are using the javascript code, it won’t work in wordpress.com.

    Try this tutorial if you want to have Addthis in your side bar:

    @novelnovels
    It’s important to understand that this is a multi-user blogging platform and the software is programmed to strip certain codes out to preserve security. See here for the restricted codes > http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

    Thanks to all!

    Hope I didn’t do anything wrong. I just won’t bother trying to use it on my blog. I kinda assumed it was HTML ignorance, but looks like a deeper issue.

    Consider it closed.

    Thanks again.

    Use http://getsociallive.com instead. It functions in much the same way and was designed for WordPress.com.

    If you are a fan of Addthis and if you don’t want anything else other than Addthis (since it is compact, takes less space and supplies you with analytics, like, how many times your posts have been shared) then there’s good news for you.

    Now you can launch the Addthis button in your blog post instantly.

    How to add Addthis in a wordpress.com blog post in ONE click

    I use AddThis for both their bookmark & RSS feed buttons. I’ve been doing so since starting the blog 2 and a 1/2 years ago and manually adding the codes into each post. Did their codes change since I started using them?

    pornstarbabylon,
    If you are going to use a “Read more” link for your posts (like you are now), then there shouldn’t be any problem with the Addthis sharing button. Because ultimately, the reader clicks the “read more” link and then the post url is present in the address bar.

    It is problematic in situations when the post url is not present in the address bar. Because Addthis code (a provided by them) that we can use in wp.com is programmed to create links to any url in the address bar.

    RSS button is ok, cos it’s blog specific and not blog post specific.

    And no, Addthis hasn’t changed their codes. But now you can insert the sharing codes automatically in one click and in ONE second (as opposed to doing it manually)

    Thanks. I went to check the buttons now to see if they went through or if I was posting dead buttons that went nowhere. haha

    @pornstarbabylon,

    I have just found out something. I don’t know if you don’t know about this at all or if you know this but choose to ignore it…

    If I try to save a post from your blog in delicious via the Addthis button you have in that post, the url field and title field in delicious screen are both populated with the url of your blog post. Ideally, you’d expect the title field to be populated with the title (and not the url) of your blog post!

    See a screenshot from delicious:

    See a screenshot from Facebook:

    The code in Facebook looks messed up!

    However, when I tried to save my post in delicious via the Addthis button I put in my post (via the one-click solution shared in this thread), the url field is populated with the blog post url and the title field is populated with the blog post title – as expected.

    I haven’t tested all the sharing sites. But I think the Addthis button code you get from Addthis is risky to use as it is. If you ask me, I am gonna use the one-click Addthis button instead.
    It is easier, quicker and risk-free.
