Adjust blog to screen resolution

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey there

I just have a question as to whether it is possible to actually make the blog adjust to the screen resolution. I am talking about my blog http://miyaautumn.com which is looking perfect on 1680×1050. Though as soon as I am looking at it with a smaller or larger screen, the actual blow window is covering more or less of the background image and the background image itself isn’t cut at the same position.

This of course is logic, but I want to change it so the blog looks the same in every resolution.

Now as I know there was a trick using percentages in the code to make all the divs and images adjust to the size of the window but I don’t know anymore how that functioned.

Is something like this possible on wordpress.com with the twenty ten theme?

If not, I definitely have to change my host etc to allow plugins to work…as I want to build up a very nice and thriving blog and it should just be great in every screen resolution and as well from its readability.

Would be great if anyone could help me here.

    Cheers
    Miya

  • Hi Miya,
You will probably receive better answers than this one, but one thing to note is that IE7 no longer has support from WordPress as it is not used by a significant portion of the web-browsing population, so if you are looking at your site in IE7, you will see more issues than if you look in a more updated browser, like IE8 or Firefox, for example.
    Good luck!

    Thanks for your answer.

Actually I am using opera, as I dislike IE. I also noticed that the site is shown differently by IE but I don’t care very much because it has always sucked as a browser and I guess it always will (Microsoft…).

I rather building my site using Firefox and Opera.

    Cheers
    Miya

Guess I just found something: http://webdesignerwall.com/tutorials/5-useful-css-tricks-for-responsive-design.

Must be possible to work around some issues with these tricks. I’m gonna have a try :-)

  • I feel you on the IE thing. The latest version is much better than the old ones, but yah. I like Firefox myself for Firebug, but I know lots of people love Opera (haven’t used it much myself).
    Good luck!

Before trying to add CSS to convert a blog from a set design into a responsive one, you should check to see if one of the themes that already has a responsive width built right in will work for you.

    Here is a list: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-width/

Twenty Eleven was the next default theme after Twenty Ten (your current theme), and so it may work out well for you. You can try it, and then decide if you want to keep the switch permanently. To make the switch, you’ll want to remove the CSS from your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS page (don’t worry, you can revert that change using the CSS revisions later if needed), then go to Appearance → Themes, search for Twenty Eleven, and activate it.

If you’d like to see the Twenty Eleven responsive design in action before switching, you can check out the demo site at http://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com/

Hmmm….but I guess it won’t take over all of my changes? I will have a look at it though. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, the past changes would probably need to be redone, but converting a not-already-responsive design theme could be an equal or more amount of work. Just one option to consider!
