Adjusting featured image size in Cubic theme

    All blog posts using the Cubic theme will display the featured image as a huge, full-width affair that dominates the screen. Is there any way of changing them to be a defined size? Or of simply putting them beneath the body text?

  • Hi there!

    I assume you refer to kwittkenagenda.wordpress.com, right? Well. Although there are two places were you have full width pics, I suppose you mean in post like https://kwittkenagenda.wordpress.com/2015/12/03/agenda-cyber-security-seminar/ not in the main page. If so, you can use CSS magic to define size or position of your featured image.

    The current scenario is your pics being 100% of the screen wide and showing just first (or top) 433px. You can adapt these values to 80% and 300px, for instance, using this code. Try to change values till the picture is aligned with your needs. :)

    body.page .entry-thumbnail, body.single .entry-thumbnail {
        height: 300px !important;
        max-width: 80%;
        margin: auto;
    }

    margin:auto; statement is used to center the picture.

    The other option you had is to put this picture beneath the body text. I personally do not recommend that, as you have a white background for your text and you should choose a color for your body text that works nice in this white background, but also with your image (And this image changes from one post to another).

    Nevertheless, you can try the following CSS code. Can you see what I meant? :)

    media="all"
    body.page.title-with-content .hentry.has-post-thumbnail .entry-header, body.single.title-with-content .hentry.has-post-thumbnail .entry-header, body.single .hentry.has-post-thumbnail.format-video .entry-header {
        background: transparent;
        margin-top: -200px;
    }

    I hope this helps. Have a great weekend.

    Thank you very much!

    If I might trouble you with a further question, is there any way of splitting the body text area into two columns? So I could have a text block on the left and insert some corresponding imagery on the right hand side?

    No worries if this isn’t doable.

    And thank you again!

    Hi, We can do something like this, but on responsive width themes, such as Cubic, there are some things to consider. On narrower screens/windows, if we keep things side-by-side, they will both end up getting very narrow, so generally with responsive designs, you would set a Media Query to make the two half-columns full width at some point so that the text would remain easily readable. This may be 800px, or possibly 600px or somewhere in between. It would depend on the nature of the images and such.

    Are you wanting just two columns or are you wanting several sections of two columns, one below the other?

    Hi, can I also bother this thread with a follow up question on the feature image option in Cubic? I started a thread here, but seems I am not getting anywhere, yet: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/speed-problems-with-cubic-theme?replies=4#post-2550401

    I am staying shy from using feature image because it takes up a huge space in the post page, and I am afraid people will not navigate down to see the galleries. But when I do not use the feature image, the theme selects, seemingly with no specific logic (I had huge problems with Chad, it kept on selecting a vertical image and then on the home page the image would look distorted, cropped, so I had to assign a feature image, but now the post page blows it up at top, and I do not like the look of it) I tried selecting the image I want first while initially forming the gallery, I tried deleting all images and uploading them in certain chronological order, nada..

    So any suggestions on how to manipulate the feature image section (a smaller feature image in a post, if I absolutely have to may be manageable, or the option of having it show in the post or not show would be swell.)

    Thanks in advance!

    (for ease of purpose, the blog I am having problems with is: bikemekberzade.wordpress.com)
