Admin bar

Sometimes when I log on the admin bar doesn’t appear. I have cleared cookies but it’s still hit and miss. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

When the admin bar doesn’t appear, are you still able to access your Dashboard at betweenthelinesbookblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin?

Also, could you let me know if you’re using Private Browsing within Safari? If you are, you will see a “Private” label on the right-hand side of your address bar.

Lastly, could you try to use another browser and see if you experience the same kind of issue after logging in (try Chrome or Firefox)?

Hi, I’m not able to access my Dashboard when the admin bar’s not there, there’s just a small follow button at the bottom right of the screen. Actually it’s not just when I log in, sometimes when I just open the page to my blog the admin bar doesn’t show and I have to keep refreshing the page until it does.
    I’m not using private browsing.

    Hey Cathy!

If you’re seeing a “Follow” option in the bottom right-hand corner of your blog, this normally means you’re not logged in at all. When you’re visiting your blog, could you first load http://betweenthelinesbookblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin? That will load your Dashboard. If you’re logged in, you’ll see your Dashboard and know you’re all set. If not, you’ll be asked to login.

Give that a try and see if that helps to clear up the issue!

Will try that, thanks. It’s strange because I never log out..

    Hey Cathy,

When you click Safari -> Settings -> Privacy, can you let me know what option you have selected under “Block cookies and website data”?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there
Yes, the selected option is to block cookies and other website data from third parties and advertisers.

Can I add on to this please. Another issue has just arisen. If I try to add a new post from the dashboard or edit from the post I get a page which I’ve never seen before. Going into the post from the drop down menu under the dashboard gives me the page I’m used to. I took a screen shot if that’s any help. Thanks

    Hey Cathy,

Yes, the selected option is to block cookies and other website data from third parties and advertisers.

That setting shouldn’t log you out when you quit Safari for the night and log back on in the morning. Let me know if you’re being logged out every time you exit Safari (i.e. you always have to log back on) now that we’re trying to load the Dashboard (the /wp-admin address) first.

If I try to add a new post from the dashboard or edit from the post I get a page which I’ve never seen before. Going into the post from the drop down menu under the dashboard gives me the page I’m used to. I took a screen shot if that’s any help.

We recently updated quite a few links to point to our new editor at http://wordpress.com/post. That sounds like the page you’re describing. The new editor is our updated editor that we’ll be focusing on and improving going forward. However, as you mention, you can still access the old editor through the method you described.

We’re collecting constructive feedback on the new editor on a main thread here:

If you would like, could you add your main sticking points to that thread? We’ll do our best to address them all!

Hi, no I don’t get logged out when I exit Safari, it’s just now and again when I open the site the admin bar is missing and it takes loads of page refreshes to get it back.

I did see the option to go back to classic mode which I’ve been using. I find classic easier to navigate and to add tags, photos ect. Actually the classic mode comes up first again now. Is that because I’ve been choosing to use it?
    Thanks

Just to add, I don’t seem to get the little follow button down on the right hand side anymore either.

    Hey Cathy!

    Please see below:

Actually the classic mode comes up first again now. Is that because I’ve been choosing to use it?

Once you click “Switch to classic mode”, that setting is saved for 6 weeks provided you don’t clear your browser cache. So, you’ll continue to be directed back to the Dashboard editor for a bit.

Just to add, I don’t seem to get the little follow button down on the right hand side anymore either.

This is good news! When you don’t see the follow button on the bottom right-hand side, that means you’re logged in. Seeing that follow button normally means you’re logged out of your site.

Not a problem! Happy to help.

    Hi Jeremey,
All has been fine for a few days but the admin bar has decided not to show again and all the widgets don’t load. Refreshing the page doesn’t help, I haven’t been logged out only closed down the page. I can’t log out because I’m having trouble with the authenticator app. Not sure why this would randomly happen with the admin bar?
    Thanks

    Hey Cathy,

So, just to reiterate, you can access your Dashboard if you visit betweenthelinesbookblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin. However, if you are just visiting your site normally (betweenthelinesbookblog.wordpress.com), the admin bar is not visible. Is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes , that’s right. I can access the admin bar if visit
    betweenthelinesbookblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin
and then if I click to go to the sire the admin bar isn’t there (and some of the widgets too). Only sometimes though. This is what I don’t understand. I’m not logging out just opening the page. Since I wrote to you it’s back again. So strange

    Hey Cathy,

That is really strange. The next time this happens, could you get a screenshot of the entire screen and upload that to your Media Library so I can take a look?

Hi JeremyIt’s been a while and all has been working well until today. I opened my site, which I haven’t logged out of, to find as per screenshot in my media library as you requested.

Sometimes the follow box in the bottom right shows and sometimes not..

    Best
    Cathy
