Admin bar blocking page jumps

Hello. I searched these forums and Google for this topic, but was unable to find anything.

I am publishing an article that has footnotes at the bottom of the page and I have dispersed corollating footnote reference numbers throughout the article. Using page jumps, I linked the reference numbers to the relevant footnote at the bottom of the page. I also linked the footnotes back to the reference numbers so that visitors can continue reading where they left off.

That has all worked out fine, except for one thing: the WP.com admin bar at the top of the page covers the line of text that I jumped to so that one can only see it after scrolling up. This is quite disorienting. Anyone who’s logged in to their WP account while reading the article will experience this problem and that is what I’m worried about.

How can we make the anchor (i.e. the line of text linked to) show up just below the admin bar for someone who’s logged in?

Here is the article I’m speaking of (scroll down to the 5th paragraph to see the footnote links): https://second-half.org/2018/02/26/cbd-test/

Thank you in advance for your help.

Please note: I’m not interested in removing the admin bar (I know that is taboo).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

P.S. I did investigate the page jump links in the post your provided the URL for above and I did not experience any Admin bar blockage.

My operating system is Windows 7 (64-bit) and the browsers I’ve been using are Chrome 64.0.3282.186, Firefox 58, and Internet Explorer 11.

I have experienced the same problem with all three.

  • Hi there,

It looks like this might actually be an issue with the Core WordPress sotfware – self-hosted sites behave the same way if you’re logged into the site and the admin bar is visible. On self-hosted sites it doesn’t affect regular site visitors as it does on WordPress.com, though, so I’ve reported it to the team to look into.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Thank you, kokkieh, for your kind response and concern. In the meantime, I’ll try to work around the problem.

  • I’ve heard back from our team. This is something that will need to be fixed on the Core software’s end. I’ll submit a bug report to them, but we have no control over how they prioritise bug fixes so I cannot give you any indication how long it might be before this is fixed.
