Admin bar not displaying correctly

  • Unknown's avatar

    When I am logged into my account and looking at my site, the admin bar at the top is displaying strangely. The dark background is in it’s usual place touching the bottom of the browser chrome, however the WordPress logo and all links are displayed look like they are about 56px down the page, so they no longer line up with the background and interfere with the site.

    I’ve replicated this in Safari, Chrome and Firefox. I’ve looked at other WordPress blogs while logged in and the admin bar does not display this behavior. It only appears to be happening on my site (for me). I’ve logged completely out and back in several times to no effect. I took the blog public (it was private) to no effect. I was using some custom CSS, so have temporarily completely removed my CSS modifications, however, there the admin bar still displays this problem. So I know that it’s not anything that I have done that could be causing this that I have been able to determine.

    Can anyone please help?

    Thanks,
    Marcus.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    We need a link to the site you are talking about please.

    And let me clarify a bit further. The admin bar is only displaying incorrectly like this on my published site, not the administration interface. The administration interface is fine.

    Sorry, when the post interface asked which blog I was talking about had my blog selected in the drop-down menu, I assumed it would publish it here.

    The blog is at http://marcuscook.wordpress.com

    I’m having exactly the same experience you’re having. Are you sure you removed all the custom CSS?

    If yes, I think you need staff attention, but they won’t be back till Monday. Try switching themes temporarily, see if that helps.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes all the CSS is removed at this moment.

    @marcuscook
    I’m using Firefox 9.0.1 and I’m seeing the strangle display of the Admin bar too.

    Just to pick up on what raincoaster said CSS is theme specific. If you have custom CSS and later change themes, you need to delete whatever CSS you have in the Editor, otherwise, you’ll get undesired results.

    To ‘reset’ a theme, you need to delete the CSS in the Editor, make sure the “add to existing CSS” radio button is checked, then save. Things should go back to normal.

    When you alter a theme’s stylesheet, you only need to put in the Editor the modification/additions to the CSS, not the entire thing. Read this for more info:

    I have deleted the custom CSS and performed that exact procedure. The only CSS code that I used previously was to add to it, not change the original theme in anyway. There is no custom CSS on my site at all (I removed it for the express purpose of testing this issue). I’ve “reset” the css.

    Drat! It’s still wonky. Maybe you ought to try switching themes like raincoaster suggested as Staff are not available until Monday.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It IS a good-looking site, though. It doesn’t look like all the custom CSS is gone; I don’t recall seeing a theme that looks exactly like that.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It’s a problem with that particular blog, because other blogs using the same theme don’t have that problem.

    Either the CSS or an unclosed HTML tag perhaps?

    Yes it could be.

    @marcuscook
    Please try this. Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”

    Then, starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay, then go to Settings->General and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML” and Update, then edit one post at a time going backwards until that problem goes away.

    The edit needn’t be big. Change a comma to a period, add a space, anything. Then Update Post. See if that fixes it, and if not, go to the next earliest post.

    OK, so I went to Settings/Writing and selected that WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and saved changes. Then I went through every page and post, made a tiny change and updated it.

    Still no effect. :-

    As to the CSS. All custom CSS was removed. When I go to edit CSS this is all that displays:

    /* Welcome to Custom CSS!

    CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a kind of code that tells the browser how to render a web page. You may delete these comments and get started with your customizations.

    By default, your stylesheet will be loaded after the theme stylesheets, which means that your rules can take precedence and override the theme CSS rules. Just write here what you want to change, you don’t need to copy all your theme’s stylesheet content.

    If you need any further help, ask in the CSS Customization forum.
    */

    So frustrating.

    Are you into trying a theme change?

  • Unknown's avatar

    To be super-cautious, I’d suggest you edit widgets too, that is any text widgets like the one in your footer.

    If that still doesn’t fix it, you’ll need to wait till Monday and then contact staff for help via your dashboard Help button.

  • Unknown's avatar

    That’s a good idea as there could be an open HTML tag in the text widget.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Found it! It was an anchor tag that wasn’t closed in the footer widget. I closed it and poof! problem goes away.

    I re-added my CSS and everything looks hunky-dorey.

    Thanks for all the help!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hooray! Thanks for letting us know this has been resolved.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yay! I’m glad I scrolled down to the footer!
