admin page

I tried using the blogname.wordpress.com/wp-admin, and it didn’t work for me. It says that it doesn’t exist. Still can’t view my dashboard or anything.

It’s a .com site and not a wordpress.com site. Does that make a difference? I tried to get there without placing “wordpress” in the line.

    Still nothing.

It does make a difference because your site at jillgarrettphotography.com isn’t hosted here on WordPressdotcom and your issue is different than what the others are posting about. If you are having difficulties reaching your site, please contact your web hosting provider, which appears to be bluehost.

WP Admin is still necessary, as far as I know, to accomplish the following tasks:
    1. Delete or edit post categories, at the wp-admin Categories page, https://yourgroovysiteURL/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category/.
    2. Set the maximum number of projects, at Writing Settings.
    3. See all of the widgets on some themes, because at Customize > Widgets some widget areas may be hidden from the list of widgets depending on which page you’re on, and whether the template is full-width or not. On certain themes some widget areas will be hidden if you’re viewing/previewing a page or post at Customize that doesn’t display all of the widget areas on the site. See the topic Edin – Missing sidebar widget, for example.
    4. Configure the various settings at Media Settings.

This should have been included in the list above:
    5. Set posts per page (“Blog pages show at most x posts”), feed length (full text or summary), disable or enable Infinite Scroll, and perhaps additional settings at Reading Settings, extension ‘wp-admin/options-reading.php’.

I have been using WP for over 6 months and its just today that I suddenly can not access the wp classic admin dashboard. A forum member has very kindly sent me a link, but I cannot access it from own blog page.

I’ve worked out how to access it via search, with help I should add. Hopefully that will continue to work. Thank you vernspad for the info.

…and yes I agree with @musicdoc1, there seem to be some tasks which can’t be accessed on the more condensed dashboard.
The thread has been very helpful. Thank you.

I agree, the Wp-Admin is certainly much easier to use and more accessible. I hav ebeen experiencing the same problem with the disappearing WP_Admin link on some of my WordPress blogs and it would be incredibly useful if a work around could be found for this.

  • Folks, you should still be able to access wp-admin, either by adding /wp-admin or (if you are a user with an older account) via the link in the menu.

For those who had the link and lost it, we are working on a fix.

For those who didn’t have the link, if you need help finding the correct link to wp-admin, please respond with a link to your site and we’ll help you get the link to wp-admin.

There are indeed a few items left that are not in Calypso yet, and for those, Happiness Engineers and support documents will refer you to wp-admin.

    Cheers, all.

My ‘WP-Admin’ magically reappeared this morning! Thanks!

    @ supernovia,

Thanks for addressing some of the issues expressed in this thread.

There are indeed a few items left that are not in Calypso yet…

Another issue that keeps arising is the absence of a direct link to the Media Library via My Sites (My Site). Oddly, it appears that one is required to open an editor in order to reach the media library via Calypso. Why?

  • Oddly, it appears that one is required to open an editor in order to reach the media library via Calypso. Why?

Great question. It could be a feature in waiting. But I do know one source of confusion for some folks in wp-admin is that posting to the media library does not post to the site, but deleting from the media library does delete from the site… I’m sure you’ve seen threads around that. And for the most part, you only need to access the media library if you’re writing a post, or uploading background or header, etc… and those do give you access to the library. Only widgets don’t, and I’ve seen talk on ways to fix that. For now, if you need to access the media library, you can either use wp-admin or start a new post.

And for the most part, you only need to access the media library if you’re writing a post, or uploading background or header, etc… and those do give you access to the library.

Thanks for the explanation. Need is one thing, preference and practice (custom, habit) are others. I, and others I’m sure, might like to add images directly to the media library for various reasons, including the following:

    • Images uploaded directly to the media library may or may not be used in a post or page, or as a header image, etc. at the time it’s added to the library, just as a book in the local library may not be checked out and read immediately upon receipt by the library.
    • Adding an image to the media library is also a way of avoiding the automatic attachment of an image to a post or page that occurs if the image is loaded via a post or page editor.
    • I also frequently go directly to the WP admin media library for the following purposes:

    • 1. To view the media library items in a list format. I typically display 30 per page, but I can just as easily set it to 50, or 150.
    • 2. To edit or delete an image (title, permalink, dimensions, aspect ratio, caption, description, etc.) or edit multiple images at one time. I still have probably thousands of images that I’d like to edit the titles of, because for years I had the habit of not editing the file title which often includes coded information about the editing that I’ve done to the image which needn’t be included in the image title. The WP Admin media library is the only place where such intensive work can be done.
    • 3. To change the attachment status. For example, changing the page or post an image is attached to, or making it unattached. I periodically make ten or twenty such changes at one time, for example, because the images were originally uploaded and attached to a post that later become a page.
    • 4. To obtain the file URL, dimensions, or other information regarding an image.
  • Unknown's avatar

    4. (continued) …without having to go to a random post or page editor.

  • No problem; for preference you can just keep using wp-admin.

  • I’m going to go ahead and close this thread since the missing links are now back, but feel free to open a new thread re: wp-admin if you’d like. (I just don’t want to keep notifying all of these folks of new replies since the original issue is resolved.)
