1. You can move blog contents using these methods >
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/import-export-links/2. Purchasing a domain results in the domain starting form scratch – zero backlinks, zero authority and “unranked” or 0/10 as a PageRank. This is because all the backlinks, authority and page rank belong to the root blog on the wordpress.com sub-domain.
3. If you wish to have your readers seamlessly transferred from the root blog URLs to the same posts in the new domain under it’s URLs then you must purchase domain mapping. If you do not purchase it then any visitor coming from a search engine using the wordpress.com root blog URLs will get a 404 (page not found).

If you do not now have a domain name, then any search engine ranking you have built up will drop back to zero when you move to the new blog. You can, use a trick with the domain mapping upgrade here to automatically redirect your visitors to your new blog if you wish ($10).
As far as moving to a self-hosted blog, it isn’t that difficult, but you will need some web saavy such as using FTP and there can also be some issues with wordpress that will require some deeper knowledge of PHP and a few other things.
In addition to a domain name, you will of course also have to secure hosting for your new blog. A few suggestions are at http://wordpress.org/hosting/ . Figure a total monthly cost of somewhere between $10 and $25 (includes hosting and the domain registration).
Many web hosts offer a one-button wordpress installation through Fantastico (typically accessed from the account cPanel) which will install the software for you and create the necessary database and database tables. Fantastico sometimes runs a version behind, so after the installation, you might have to do an immediate upgrade so that you are using the latest version. WordPress has an automatic upgrade feature you can use, but I’ve found that in most instances you have to create a php.ini file and set a higher memory limit for wordpress PHP or the automatic upgrade may error our on you.
You will be responsible for all installations, upgrades, backups and troubleshooting. If something goes wrong, you will have to figure it out and fix it. You are also your own security, so you have to make sure that you make your installation as secure as possible by creating strong passwords and making sure that your files and folders on the web host have their permissions set correctly.
You can transfer your posts, pages, categories, tags and links from your blog here over to the new blog relatively easily.
