ads for aesthetic purposes

I was just reviewing the FAQs for info about placing amazon ads, and it appears they aren’t allowed. This is disappointing, as I wanted them not for commercial purposes, but rather to enhance the aesthetic value of the site — in an Andy Warhol kind of way. Can exceptions be made for this? I converted from blogger to wordpress for the style factor, but on some accounts, people here seem to take themselves pretty seriously.

perhaps the solution to my problem is to create images of the “ads” I want to display, and include them without links. Kosher?

If you have read the FAQs then you know the only exceptions made are on VIP accounts. http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/ Otherwise, no exceptions are made. However, if the spirit moves you then on Monday you can click on the feedback button on the top right hand corner of any blog page and tell staff all about your desire to run amazon ads for aesthetic purposes. This can of course be accomplished by using images without links.

However, if you consider linking to Amazon to be an essential wordpress has another option. You can hire a web host and him or her download a free blog template from http://wordpress.org

Their blogs run on different software than ours do. They have different policies as well and the distinctions are outlined here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700&page&replies=1

I am pretty sure there will be no exceptions as it has been dicussed many times. I am not sure on the policy but if its just aesthetics just make up your own ad images and post them with no links. A dead jpg with no hyperlink. Otherwise you have to send a feedback in to support for policy questions.

you might want to email staff. i believe that what’s prohibited are affiliate links (from http://associates.amazon.com). standard links to amazon shouldn’t be against the ToS.

but then, they might not want to have to look at amazon’s improbably long url’s to figure out if you’re getting a kickback from it or not.

if you just want bookcovers, you might check out http://librarything.com
if it’s really aesthetics you’re concerned with, you could always just put up the image, without the link.

    wow, i type slow.

yeah, just the images without the links is ok. you might want to make sure each img tag has an alt attribute with the title of the book.

    @sun
If you think that type slow … lol … then note that by the time I finished there were 4 more posts below mine. :D

  • Unknown's avatar

hey, you finished typing. when i started typing, there were no posts. so you and everyone above me types faster than i do. i type 56 WPM. 0_o

(then again, i had to look up librarything). on that note, i’m off to request a librarything widget.

Best bet would be to ask staff directly. Some exceptions have been made in the past. I know of at least one record review site that seems to have gotten (unofficial at least) approval but they’re writing 5k word reviews with an affliate link to buy the album.

As Mark said once, content is key.

If it’s aesthetics then ryannjenn has the answer.
If it’s ads, the FAQ has.
