Ads-free upgrade
-
First, if you are going to run ads on our pages, we need to be able to see the ads. Why the heck not let us see what our visitors are seeing? Second, you state on the upgrade page that you need the $30 per year to cover your expenses – does it really cost WordPress $30 a year to host a basic website? Finally, when a user does decide to pay up to avoid the ads, your payment page is apparently not secure, and even shows the security code digits of the users credit card instead of blanking them out. I don’t feel comfortable doing that. Anyone else share these concerns?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Millions of people, who now pay $10 a month and up to host WordPress.org blogs elsewhere.

I have had it with marking threads to have Staff waster their valuable time removing the spam you keep posting – SPAM OFF! -
‘First, if you are going to run ads on our pages, we need to be able to see the ads. Why the heck not let us see what our visitors are seeing?’ You’ll actually see a sample ad with a message saying about why there are ads on your blog once you view a single post.
‘Second, you state on the upgrade page that you need the $30 per year to cover your expenses – does it really cost WordPress $30 a year to host a basic website?’ Divide 30 by 12 (months) and you get 2.5, which means you’re only paying $2.5 a month for awesome features (such as unlimited bandwidth and great security) rather than the $20 a month most hosting sites do, which includes lesser features and some limitations.
‘Finally, when a user does decide to pay up to avoid the ads, your payment page is apparently not secure, and even shows the security code digits of the users credit card instead of blanking them out. I don’t feel comfortable doing that.’ I think Automattic might have forgotten this, but, you can actually enable secure browsing by going through your blog’s dashboard and opening the ‘Screen Options’ section, you’ll see an option for ‘Always use HTTPS when visiting administration pages.’

A sample ad is nice, but what if some are ok and some are offensive, disturbing or ethically questionable? Why the secrecy about content?
It seems like a big jump in price from free to $30 a year. What does it actually cost to provide the service?
Does “secure browsing” mean my credit card information can’t be intercepted?

A sample ad is nice, but what if some are [OK], and some are offensive, disturbing, or ethically questionable? Why the secrecy about content?’ Automattic ensures that there aren’t any inappropriate ads that will show up on your blog. If you really want to make sure what the ads look like, open up a private browsing window and head to your blog. This will, of course, add to your blog statistics.
‘It seems like a big jump in price from free to $30 a year. What does it actually cost to provide the service?’ Really, anyone with a computer can host a WordPress.com-like service. But they can’t provide the same awesome features Automattic gives out. You’re saving a lot here, honestly.
‘Does “secure browsing” mean my credit card information can’t be intercepted?’ Of course. If the website you’re going to doesn’t have a secure connection, your computer can connect to other servers as coded by the site owner. Whilst, secure browsing will connect to one server, and one server only, which is specifically the domain’s specified server.
In this case, once you’ve sent your credit card information, it cannot be interfered by other servers unless it’s from the server the domain uses, so your credit card information is being sent from your computer to wordpress.com only.

My site here costs me $ 43.- / year (Domain Mapping & No Ads)
I was having dinner Friday night with a friend and that is way less than her low traffic but needs it to be in business site costs her PER MONTH – and the staff do all the Site Admin and upgrading stuff – she was very envious of my good deal

@TT – maybe there is Karma – ipdesigns007 has had all their comments removed from the forum and their blog suspended for some sort of TOS issue
