Ads in follow/subscription emails

  • Unknown's avatar

    Someone who follows/subscribes to our blog got an email notification that a post was published. It had a strange ad about manscaping in it. Are these ads something we can turn off with an upgraded plan?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

    Thanks for getting in touch. Please ask that subscriber to use the “report this ad” option when it is displayed. That will help us track it down.

    Folks will see ads that are pertinent to their own personal browsing history. If I look at buying new shoes, I can expect to see shoe advertisements following that. Does that make sense?

    You are able to turn the ads off if you want as part of your upgraded plan. Let me know if you need help with that.

    Hello,
    How to report an add in an email – there does not seem to be any option for that.
    Thanks!

  • Hi @blogonlinguistics,

    Can you please grab a screenshot of that ad and share it here so we can have a look? You can use a tool like https://snag.gy/ to quickly grab a screenshot.

    Hi fstat,
    Thanks for your reply. I have already grabbed and attached the screenshot through this form: https://en.support.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

    It was two days ago.

    Shall I also post it here?

    Thanks!

  • @blogonlinguistics sure. It looks like the link in your report was broken. Could you upload the image via wordpress.com/media, and let us know here when it’s uploaded? We’ll update the report.

  • We’ll update your report with that.

    Please note ads do help cover our costs, though, and we aren’t able to control which ads appear on which sites. Your best bet if you want to go ad free is to upgrade to any of our paid plans.

    @supernovia,
    (beautiful name, by the way).
    Thanks for this!
    I am ok with ads with neutral content; it’s just the ones enhancing someone this way seem quite inappropriate generally speaking and in the context of such blogs as mine (there must be thousand blogs like mine) – extremely inappropriate.
    Thanks!
    i.

  • Hmm, enhancing someone? I don’t know if we saw the same picture then, and now I can’t see a picture at all at that link anymore.

    Will you upload a screenshot to your media library after all? Don’t delete it until the ad team responds. Thanks!

    @supernovia,
    Thanks for your reply here is the link:

    Perhaps, the word “enhance” is imprecise. How about the word misleading? Nostradmus is known for prophecies and this ad claims the person is a modern day Nostradamus which is misleading because it presupposes the person prophesies.

    Cheers!
    i.

  • Hi there,

    We cannot block specific ads like that, and that ad does fit our guidelines for inappropriate ads we don’t want appearing on WordPress.com.

    And as staff-zinnia pointed out above, what ads any person sees depends on factors like their location and browser history. In other words, that ad is not being shown on or for your site, it’s being shown to you, and it’s even possible that no one else viewing your site or receiving subscription emails is seeing that particular ad.

    You can prevent ads from appearing on your site or in subscription emails to your site’s subscribers by upgrading to any of our paid plans.
