To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements, and the agreement for this has been in our terms of service since 2006.
We try hard to only run them in limited places, but there are no content-specific ad controls. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

If you write about recovering from alcoholism you will see ads for spirits, just like blogs writing about recovering from mental illness will eventually showcase ads for $cientology. Look at it as WordPress’ fun way of bringing opposites together.

Well, not necessarily that, but the ads are somewhat contextual. So, if you write about alcohol in any form, you might see ads for alcohol.
