ads on site
-
Hello: I’m one of the administrators on a site hosted by wordpress.org. Our site represents a group of dedicated and trained volunteers who assist individuals and groups in the community by advising on good horticultural practices. We meet monthly and share information with the community as a whole on our wordpress.org site. While we’re happy that we have this forum, the advertising is very overwhelming to our readers. It overshadows the page’s content with large photos (ie. Stop Snoring methods) and is often repetitively displayed as readers scroll down the page. We do not collect money from the public, we are not reimbursed for our services, travel, gardening materials etc. & we have minimal membership dues ($30/annum). There are only 25 in the group but several hundred use information from the site monthly.
What can be done to remove these ads?

Hello: I’m one of the administrators on a site hosted by wordpress.org
Hi there, you mention ORG, but the site you’ve linked to is hosted here on WordPressdotcom. Just to clarify please read about the differences here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you need help with gardenexpressions.wordpress.com which is hosted here on WordPressdotcom, then the only way to remove advertising is by upgrading to one of the paid plans.
https://wordpress.com/pricing/WordPressdotcom has been placing advertising on free-hosted sites since about 2006 and tries to show them in limited places mostly to logged out users who reach your site via a search. If you are seeing excessive advertising on your site even while logged in to your WordPressdotcom account, you might want to check your device for any adware that may have been inadvertently installed.
If you mean advertising on a site which is not hosted here on WordPressdotcom, we won’t be able to help you with that.
Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello: I’m working to try to understand the differences in .com and .org I had thought it was the other way round – that dotORG was for non-profits and free.
Do you also host this page by one of our fellow groups?

They do not seem to have ads and have a .com address.
Respectfully,

Yes that site is hosted by WordPress.com, but they have a custom domain name (no .wordpress.com at the end of their address), so will be paying annually for an upgraded plan, hence no adverts.

To get a custom domain and no ads the Personal plan would be sufficient. There is a saving to be had if you pay for two years upfront rather than one year.

I’m looking and finding the cost of $60. I know our group cannot afford that. We do not have an operating budget. Members use their own cars, pay for gas to visit community groups, buy and prepare their own materials to teach groups. We dedicate hundreds of hours in volunteer time for a group of 25 to our local communities. Is there another solution?

Hello again, I’m afraid not. Here’s what I currently see on your site at gardenexpressions.wordpress.com when logged out of WordPressdotcom
(temp screenshots)You mentioned “overwhelming” which neither of those screenshots seems to indicate.
If you are seeing excessive advertising on gardenexpressions.wordpress.com please take screenshots and upload them to your site’s Media Library. Come back and post here when you’ve done that and then tag this thread for Staff attention by adding the MODLOOK tag to this thread’s sidebar. https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

Also, different ads appear depending on your local and whether WordPressdotcom’s advertising partners have a market interest there. I see WPcom ads because there may not be a local partner currently available where I am. You may see something different, *but, to the best of my knowledge, the number of ads do not change.
