Ads on WordPress?
-
Hi all,
Today I saw an ad under one of my posts. Five minutes later, it was gone. Is that normal? I didn’t sign up for Adsense or someting like that. Can WordPress put ads on my blog because I don’t host it myself?
Thanks for any help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

From the support document on advertising:
Note: To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements. We try hard to only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade.
From the Terms of Service:
10. Advertisements. Automattic reserves the right to display advertisements on your blog unless you have purchased an Ad-free Upgrade or a VIP Services account.

we are considering upgrade to custom for $30 but can’t tell if that will end the adverting. We don’t have to also purchase add-free or the ‘bundle’ do we?
-
There is no bundle purchase required. To remove all advertising you only have to purchase the No-Ads upgrade. http://support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

thanks for your reply, but my question is if ads go away as a result of paying and using the custom upgrade. i can’t find confirmation on that and no response yet from support…Seems like you have to bundle to get both which of course would be silly.

if ads go away as a result of paying and using the custom upgrade.
Yes they do and you do not need confirmation from Staff. I have this No-Ads upgrade and so do many others. In fact the only purpose the No-Ads upgrade is for is to remove all advertising displayed on your blog.
To eliminate ads on your blog entirely, you can purchase the No-Ads Upgrade. The upgrade is especially attractive and useful to business blogs in order to eliminate any possibility of competitors’ ads displaying on their domains. http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

Okay, I’m not interested in buying the no ads upgrade. We are considering the custom upgrade. Two different options each cost $30. My question is if we ONLY buy the custom upgrade will we then no longer have the ads? Anyone else please?
-
No. Each upgrade is for a specific purpose only. Each upgrade is only for one blog and only for one year. There are no hidden “perks”. You get exactly what you pay for.
custom design is for CSS editing to change appearance only
No-Ads is to remove ads only -
My question is if we ONLY buy the custom upgrade will we then no longer have the ads?
In case I was not clear above I am posting gain. The answer is “no”. If you only buy the custom design upgrade then you only get the custom design upgrade for one blog for one year, when you must renew it or the theme will revert to what it was without the CSS editing. The custom design upgrade support doc does not state it’s for removal of ads at all. The two are not associated in any way.

If you pay for a No-Ads upgrade the ads initiated by WordPress.com already running on your blog will be removed from our blog. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.
If your blog becomes successful and has over 20,000 page views each month then you can apply to have it included in the WordAds program which has not yet been launched. Otherwise no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted WordPress.COM blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.COM
The advertising exceptions noted in support documentation are for high traffic blogs that qualify for and are accepted into the Ad Control program, soon to be replaced with the WordAds program, and for extremely high traffic blogs that qualify and are accepted into the paid VIP hosting program.

If you pay for No Ads, you get no ads until the upgrade runs out. If you buy the Pro Upgrade, you get no ads till the upgrade runs out. If you buy any other upgrade or combination NOT including No Ads, you will have ads.
