Ads playing & freezing WordPress.com every time I PREVIEW a post

  • Unknown's avatar

Every time I hit PREVIEW of a blog post, WordPress.com is now freezing all functionality for at least 10 seconds while an ad plays.

Wow. As somebody who previews and tweaks every draft before posting it — sometimes a half dozen times in the final minute before hitting PUBLISH, this is a nightmare. If this is a new feature of WordPress.com, it’s reason enough to send me packing to another publishing service.

Is this what we are to expect from now forward?

    Hello @presidentsrace
I tried doing the same for 6-8 times but I did not get any ads.

Maybe staff can assist you with you. So, i am tagging this thread for staff attention.

    Thanks! 🙂

Hi there, What kind of ads are you seeing? Any advertising that is being displayed by WordPressdotcom normally has a line above it “About these ads” with a link to an explanation page https://en.support.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

I’ve left this tagged for Staff attention, but you may wish to run an anti-malware/adware program on your computer to rule out the possibility of your computer being infected.

    Thank you for these suggestions

  • Hi there,

We don’t show any ads when previewing post drafts or post updates, so I highly doubt these ads are coming from us.

Can you please try running a malware scan as @justjennifer suggested? It might also help if you can take a screen shot of one of the ads and upload it to your site’s media library for me.

Does the URL in your browser change while the ad appears, or does it still show the wordpress.com/post/{site}/{post-id} URL?

I had not upgraded my WordPress package to the premium level that suppresses ads, so I spent the money and did that, just to see what would happen.

Lo and behold, the ads stopped playing when I click preview on a draft post.

So I don’t know what to say, except I don’t think it was malware. Not saying it was intentional on your part, but some bug with WordPress was forcing me to watch ads, and it went away when I paid you money.

but some bug with WordPress was forcing me to watch ads, and it went away when I paid you money.

Then it is a shame that you weren’t able to grab a screenshot or answer my above questions, because as @kokkieh confirmed WordPressdotcom does not include advertisements on previews of post drafts so it isn’t necessary to pay money in order to “remove” them.

I would still recommend running a malware scan on your computer such as MalwareBytes (No Affiliation – YadaYada). You have a 30-day window to request a refund for your WordPressdotcom upgrade should you choose to do so. https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/

  • I just checked using a different account from my staff one, an account with no upgrades at all, and I didn’t see any ads in either the pop-up or full screen preview. In fact, you should never see ads on your own site while logged in. Visitors to your site might see ads occasionally, but never the site owner.

If it is a bug we need to fix it, but we can’t fix it if we can’t see it, unfortunately. That’s why I asked the questions I did before.

    Completely understood.
