ads showing up without permission

  • Unknown's avatar

All of a sudden today I have ads on my free wordpress.com blog. I didn’t ask for them and don’t want them. But I don’t know how to get rid of them, and it interferes with reading the blog because it randomly scrolls down to the ad before you can finish reading the post.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • At WordPress.com, we sometimes display advertisements on your blog to help pay the bills. This keeps free features free! The ads your viewers will see are determined by their location, browsing histories, and other factors.

See https://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/ for more details on how to have “Ads Free” website on WordPress.com.

    Hi @aithpassagesblog

I don’t see the ads which you’re able to see on your blog or website,
I think there should be an issue with your browser try clearing your browser cookies or resetting your browser ( make sure you take backup of bookmarks or Saved password or autofill details).

If you’re only the one able to see the ads on your blog then I am sure there will be an issue with browser extensions or bad cookies (try to remove by clearing history).
Also, ask your friend to visit your website and check he’s able to see any ads on it.

    I agree with @akumarjain,
WordPress.com shows ads on your blogs sometimes if you’re on ”Free plan” and they are WordPress.com ads check out the link which has already mentioned
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

    Thanks!

Unless you purchase a Personal plan http://wordpress.com/pricing or a higher level Premium or Business Plan there will be ads placed by WordPress.COM on your site.

That said, I am not running an AdBlocker and I do not see ads on your site at https://faithpassagesblog.wordpress.com/2017/09/12/the-valley-of-gods-glory/

If the ads you see are found at the end of blog posts then provided you see this small About These Ads link what you are seeing is WordPress.com generated advertising. http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

Any other ads appearing to you are not placed by WordPress.com. You have an issue on your browser or computer. They are being placed there by software on your own computer, unfortunately. These ads are sometimes caused by malware or a virus, but more often it is due to a browser extension or toolbar that you may have installed in your browser.

These sites have further explanation and suggestions for eliminating the ads:
    http://www.littletechiethings.com/2012/06/how-to-remove-ads-not-by-this-site.html
    http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/05/14/ads-on-wikipedia-your-computer-infected-malware/

Note that whenever one is asking for Staff help about ads appearing on their site by typing the modlook tag in the sidebar of the thread, posting screenshots is very helpful. You can use http://snag.gy/ or http://cloudup.com to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

Thank you all for your help. I am just concerned that there may be ads that are not appropriate for my site. I will have my tech person check for malware, but if not, I may have to pay for the plan that will let me eliminate ads. Thanks again.

  • Hi there,

it interferes with reading the blog because it randomly scrolls down to the ad before you can finish reading the post.

We only place an ad at the end of the first post on your site’s front page, and at the bottom of each page and single-post view. For example, this is what I see on your site:

    https://cloudup.com/cru5a6NInSR

None of these ads should cause the page to automatically scroll to the ad, so if you are seeing something like that the ad might be coming from something else.

Please take a screen shot of the ad in question, and add it to your media library, and I can take a look.

I am just concerned that there may be ads that are not appropriate for my site.

The ads that visitors will see depends on their location and browser history. The content of your site has no effect at all on the type of ads that appear. That said, if you see an add, or a visitor to your site reports an ad, that is inappropriate, take a screen shot and send it to us and we can look into it.

Thank you, Kikkieh. The random scrolling has stopped now. I’ll see what happens. Once these ads start will they always be coming up?
Time to go to church. I’ll check in when we get home. Thank you to all who have responded so far. It has been very helpful. I’m not feeling quite so anxious about it, but I still feel that the ads might detract the readers or feel that I am somehow endorsing the products in the ads.

  • Once these ads start will they always be coming up?

We show ads on all free sites, but ads like you are describing should not appear on WordPress.com at all. They should look like the ones in the screen shot I gave above.

I still feel that the ads might detract the readers or feel that I am somehow endorsing the products in the ads.

You can prevent any ads from displaying on your site by purchasing any of our paid plans. See here for more information:

    No Ads

Thank you, kokkieh. I appreciate your thoughts. My blog is not a commercial venture for me. It is a ministry to those going through the kind of things I have experienced and how God has taught me through that process. That’s why I think the ads are a distraction. I will check out the paid plans you mention, but I do so with a bit of sadness. However, I do understand your position as a business that something has to pay for the “free” things. I guess I thought that all of the people who have paid sites covered the others. Thank you again for your help. I’ll check out the plans.

  • I completely understand that ads can be a distraction. We do have clear guidelines for what types of ads our advertising partners can show on site, though, so if you see anything that’s not family-safe, or ads that hijack the browser in any way, like the scrolling behaviour you mentioned above, please take a screen shot of the app and let us know so we can investigate. We need the screen shot, as we won’t necessarily see the same add you see when viewing the site.
