  why are ads still appearing on my website when I upgraded to the premium package that includes no ads?

  You are set up with WordAds:

  WordAds

  That will supersede the NoAds upgrades (because we assume that if you signed up with WordAds, you’d like to make money by running them). You can pause or stop WordAds at any time in your Dashboard > Settings > WordAds.
