Adsense code being modified by wordpress and not displaying

I am trying to add Adsense code to a text widget, but after I copy and paste the code and hit save, the code is then modified and doesn’t display properly. All that shows up in the space where the add should be is:
//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});Does anyone know how to correct this?

Third-party advertising is not allow on WordPress.COM sites. Adsense coding won’t work here. Banner ads are strictly prohibited and are considered a violation of the Terms of Service, and can get your site suspended.
“Advertisements, including those from third-party advertising networks like Google AdSense, OpenX, Lijit, BuySellAds, and Vibrant Media are not allowed on WordPress.com.”
You can apply for WordAds, but must have a custom domain.

If you want to include advertising, you would have to go to a self-hosting WordPress.ORG site. WP.Com and WP.Org are two separate platforms, using different software.
