Advertisement hijacking page
-
I’m not trying to do anything, but the ad for White Smoke is hijacking my pages. That is, whenever it appears, one cannot read anything but that ad (and whatever happens to be in its immediate vicinity). If you try to scroll back to the post, it immediately returns to the ad. If you reload the page, all is well–until White Smoke comes round in the cycle again.
I can’t say whether this is true on Firefox; however, it does happen on Microsoft Edge.

Ads have been appearing on WordPress.COM sites since 2006.
Unless you purchase a Personal plan http://wordpress.com/pricing or a higher level Premium or Business Plan there will be ads placed by WordPress.COM on your site.
If the ads you see are found at the end of blog posts then provided you see this small About These Ads link then what you are seeing is WordPress.com generated advertising. http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/
Any other ads appearing to you are not placed by WordPress.com. You have an issue on your browser or computer. They are being placed there by software on your own computer, unfortunately. These ads are sometimes caused by malware or a virus, but more often it is due to a browser extension or toolbar that you may have installed in your browser.
These sites have further explanation and suggestions for eliminating the ads:

You can use http://snag.gy/ or http://cloudup.com to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

Hi –
Thanks for getting in touch and reporting this. We will take a closer look. Could you grab a screen shot of the ad appearing on the site for us? Thanks!

As of this morning, there no longer is an issue with the WhiteSmoke ads. However, I would like to point out (to Timethief) that her condescending attitude–combined with the simple truth that not one of her points was news to me–added nothing to the conversation.

Alright, if you see them again be sure to grab a screen shot. Ads can be tricky to track down so the more information we have the better. Take care :)
