I wonder if WordPress allows me to accommodate advertisements from various companies. I have been approached by several people to have their ads placed in my blog.

If you want a monetized blog you are in the wrong place. No blogger initated advertising is allowed on wordpress.com blogs. WordPress.com free hosted blogs cannot be used to drive traffic to third party sites. And only some types of blogs are allowed.
