  Can I place adverts, either banner or google adsense, on my blog and receive the revenue.

  No. That’s banned at WordPress.com. What you can do is wait till they re-open applications for the Word Ads program and then apply to split revenue with WordPress.com.

  does this also apply once and if and when I’ve added my own site, e.g. example.com as opposed to myblog.wordpress.com?

  The domain name upgrade applies only to exactly what it says. Your blog is still hosted here, and has all the limitations of that, only it has a new URL, that’s all. If you actually buy web hosting elsewhere and set up a blog using software from WP.org, then you can do what you want with it.
