advertising clarification

I have reviewed the FAQs and other info here. Can someone verify the following items for me:
    1. A link to a book on Amazon (e.g.–within a post in which a particular book is discussed) that has an affiliate code in it is OK.
    2. AdSense ads are not OK (is this also true if I have mapped to my own domain?).

    Thanks!

#1 – Ask support. I think it’s okay if you’re the author but if not…

#2 – That’s correct on both counts. Domain mapping does not negate any of the limitations, including those on monetization.

    Check this out: http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

1 “To be clear, examples like people writing original book or movie reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. “

    And this: http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/

2 “Adsense, Yahoo, Chitika, TextLinkAds and other ads are not permitted to be added by users. Please send us feedback if you’d like to put ads on your blog – we are considering such a feature for a future upgrade.”

Sorry, 1 should have read: “To be clear, examples like people writing original book or movie reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category [i.e. banned].” You should be fine.

“To be clear, examples like people writing original book or movie reviews and linking them to Amazon…

What I’m not clear about is whether that means a simple link to the product or a monetizing link with an affiliate code, as asked about. If the latter, I guess we’ll all start book and movie review blogs.

YES, YES, YES we want that upgrade!

“Adsense, Yahoo, Chitika, TextLinkAds and other ads are not permitted to be added by users. Please send us feedback if you’d like to put ads on your blog – we are considering such a feature for a future upgrade

    Hullo!

    Yeah, Stevep264 is right.

You know what? Stevep264 is also doomed. He’s going to have to wait YEARS before that’s approved at WP.com unless I miss my guess.

Ha! I love it when they make it so easy for me.

NO. You will not find an answer there that will prevent your blog from being deleted.

I’m still not sure I’m clear on my first example. Say we were discussing literature. A blog posting might include this sentence:

Here is Amazon’s listing for the Penguin edition of _Jane Eyre_.

The underlined bit would be a link that included an affiliate identifier. The link is indistinguishable from any other, is not an ad, and does what it purports to do.

    Thanks!

As far as volunteers in the forum can guess, it is okay. But you definitely need to ask staff. If you were the author, it would definitely be okay. If all of your posts contain affiliate links, even one, then no, it is not okay. But for the middle ground, you would need to as staff.

You can read more about the WordPress ads policy (including AdSense) here at this wp support blog:

    On Ads

As someone whose WP blog is strictly social, I want more transparency about the policy and how it is implemented. I also want the ability to say “no Adsense” on my blog.

I do understand that WP needs to generate funds, but I don’t think using stealth ads is the right way to go about it. I discovered ads for products I oppose appearing with my posts — ads that completely contradicted what I was blogging about — I was not happy at all.

I have written to WP support to ask them to be a bit more upfront in explaining the policy and illustrating how it is implemented. They need to do this in the front matter.
