Advertising on my website

I wanted to set up Google Adsense onto website, so I can run adverts for them. I copy and pasted the Adsense code into a “text” widget but I don’t think its worked so I’m not sure whether this is because WordPress doesn’t allow this or whether its because I’ve done something wrong. I also want to do the same for Amazon affiliates so I would appreciate your advice.

We do have an advertising program called WordAds.

Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed.
There are no restrictions if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.

Please see this guide to learn about the differences. We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I’m not really very technically minded so my next few questions may seem a little silly but anyway from reading the information contained within the links you have provided, my question is as follows. With either option, would my web address change? And would I lose all my blogs, comments, themes/appearance on my current web site.

With regards to your hosting recommendations if I opted for wordpress.org, would these companies simply act as a platform to host my web address? Would the security of my website be included as part of their service?

  • With either option, would my web address change?

Only if you go self-hosted, you wouldn’t have the WordPress.com URL.

And would I lose all my blogs, comments, themes/appearance on my current web site.

No, all of those can be transferred.

With regards to your hosting recommendations if I opted for wordpress.org, would these companies simply act as a platform to host my web address?

Correct, just like your hard drive “hosts” your music collection.

Would the security of my website be included as part of their service?

That depends on the hosting provider. Some keep their services very secure from the start.

OK so I’ve looked into and I am going to sign up to Dreamhost, however in order to transfer my domain from WordPress they need an authorisation code which you need to provide to me. Can you please send this to me?

This guide explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar.

Thanks for this, I’ve just quickly glanced at the guide and not sure if I have reached a stumbling block. The beginning of the guide quotes “Note: You may not transfer a domain name for 60 days after its purchase or for 60 days after you change any registrant contact information.” I joined wordpress and set up my domain name as http://jessrandall.wordpress.com, on the 24th March, however on the 30th April I decided to changed it to http://jessrandall.com and paid a fee to do this, therefore does this apply to me, and if so which of the two dates should I use to calculate the 60 day transfer date.
    Many thanks

Your domain was registered at 2012-04-30. Which means you need to wait 45 days to be able to transfer the domain. Another option would be pointing the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), please follow the instructions here.

Note you will need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

Hope this helps – let us know if you have any more questions!

Thank you for your help and advice.
I followed the instructions in your last reply, however on Step 4 “Click the Nameservers button.” I selected the “I have specific nameservers for my domains” but it didn’t work, but another option “I have a hosting account with these domains.” did seem to work when I clicked the OK button. The request has been sent to WordPress Support so is it possible you can change it if I have done it incorrectly?

  • The nameservers are pointing to us now. Is that what you had intended, or were you going to point them to Dreamhost?
