Advertising on my wordpress site

Have not looked at my site for a while, and now I see there are a couple of advertisements on the bottom of each page. How did this happen?

WordPress.com displays adverts on free sites. This keeps free features free! The ads your viewers will see are determined by their location, browsing histories, and other factors.
You could remove them by upgrading to the Personal plan.
