Advertising on WordPress
-
I started WordPress this week for two reasons; a hobby and some pocket money to go with it. I had seen a thousand videos on YouTube where people link Adsense to WordPress. I tried it and none of the displays seen in the video (eg plugins under Appearance) seemed to correlate with what I saw. I then read on here that Adsense was against policy. Can someone please let me know whether it is or not supported; if so, how do I align my accounts; if it is not supported, then how do I generate revenue? Thanks….

The videos apply only to wordpress.ORG software installs. They do not apply to WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
No blogger initiated advertising for driving traffic to third party sites is allowed. PPC is not allowed. Affiliate marketing banners and any and all advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.COM are not allowed.
The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains.

http://en.wordpress.com/tos/WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Thanks for the reply. I guess it’s immaterial but how did 2 sites with almost the same name but clear differences come about? Is it like Visa Inc and Visa Europe (2 entirely separate companies that happen to share a brand)? Anyway, so I can use Adsense on the first but not the second, is the bottom line? And they are different sites. But almost the same?

WordPress.ORG is the keeper of the “WordPress” software – they are not a host – you need to buy hosting but the software is free
WordPress.COM is very closely related to .ORG but .COM is a turnkey ready to go web site / blog system – and one of the terms of service is you can not sell your own ads – you are not charged here to set up a basic blog

Thanks for your replies. Silly me. Makes me wonder how we (the public) are all supposed to deal with the the Internet of Things. Or maybe our toasters and kettles will make a better go of it all. Will they have forums?!?!
