(#2 on the list)No monetizing:

Yes i do, its : http://leafarmusic.wordpress.com/
So it is not possible to monetize my website in any way whatsoever? Does this not make wordpress.com kinda completely and utterly useless for a hell of a lot of people?
Thats great, i just paid to be able to use CSS.
The amount of energy ive spent in trying to just have a website and learning about whats involved and jumping through hoop after hoop is unbelieveable.
But i guess thats ok. I guess i can just start again with wordpress.org, which is just software, and then ill have to pay to host the site.
Its enough to make me tear my hear out.

The bulk of people wanting to make money blogging end up making less than $100 per year through advertising, which isn’t enough to pay for hosting and domain registration fees. It takes 100k blog hits per month to break even.
And the number of internet users such as myself using adblockplus plugins for their browsers means that those of us using it literally never see ads anywhere on the web.

leafarmusic,
The terms of service (tos) when you signed up for wp.com were what you agreed to.
If you have a book that you’ve written, or have an etsy shop—that works. Of if you have some interesting thoughts, or even not interesting ideas… just for fun stuff, that is good. But no affiliates, no adverts, no comps from sponsors, no paid blogging reviews, with wp.com.
Tearing your heart out would likely be more painful than necessary. -
Ok heres what i want to do with my site in relation to making money :
– I want to have an amazon AStore (which technically is aff. marketing isnt it?)
– I want to have a widget from a site where i can sell my own music
– Id like to also do any other kind of affiliate marketing relating to the topic of my site (music, funk and soul)Can i embed the amazon store widget? What about my own store widget? Anything else?
And for the things that i cant do, can i at least embed the site that it comes from, or have a link to it?
-
And if i cant have the widget for selling my music or whatever, am i allowed to promote it?
-
You can review this wordpress document which what is and is not possible: http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/ .
Selling stuff you actually create, such as your music, should be alright, but affiliate marketing and such is not.
-
How do i contact the gods of wordpress to ask them to clarify (that document is a lot to read through and i will eventually read it)?
-
For a definite answer, you should contact support, but note that these are likely answers:
“an amazon AStore (which technically is aff. marketing isnt it?”
no, and I think you answered your own question. No.
“I want to have a widget from a site where i can sell my own music”
maybe, but your blog needs to have its own original content. Something a reader would be interested in, and not primarily directing to another site.
“Id like to also do any other kind of affiliate marketing relating to the topic of my site (music, funk and soul)”
~~no adverts, no paid reviews, no comps from sponsors~~
“or have a link”
a link is probably okBest for you is likely a self-hosted blog.
-
Hi Richard, glad to see you back~~~ I’m a slow typer and forget to refresh the page before posting.
-
The Astore is definitely out as is the affiliate marketing for music stuff.
As far as selling your own music via a service, talk with staff about it. I know they allow people to sell art and such via Etsy, so as long as the music is yours (doesn’t violate any copyrights or anything like that ) I suspect something can be worked out.
-
Hi Tess. I’ve been back for several days but have been trying to slip back into normal life – which isn’t easy after three weeks in paradise.
-

Tess :
I dont mind having a link to the amazon store. In fact i can have a link to another site which does allow me to embed the widget and even the whole page. So thats not a major problem, as long as i design both sites (my wordpress site and my other one) to look similar and have a nav bar directing people back to my wordpress site, so it feels like theyre (visitors) are on the same site.
I could do the same with any aff. marketing.
As for my own stuff, i really would prefer to be able to do that on the wordpress site. Are you saying that its ok? I certainly wont have my site be just a source of links to other sites.
Which reminds me. I do want a Links page, and i have a hell of a lot of links to put on it. Surely that ok?
Sorry for all the questions but i really am clueless.
-
leafarmusic,
You do realize that we in these forums are your fellow bloggers and as such we don’t make final decisions? Yes?
If your blog has interesting content for readers, my opinion is that you can have links to what ever you like. But no adverts, no comps, no affiliates. A links widget is surely fine.
But after you study the terms of service, if you have questions, then you should certainly contact support.
Also, please don’t be shy to link your name to your blog:

I read recently that the majority of people don’t read the contracts they sign. I guess it was right.
In the midst of whining and kvetching about time spent, hearts being torn out (or was it supposed to be hair?), and paying for hosting, keep in mind the free alternative of Blogger.
-
I read recently that every forum has a resident member that prefers criticizing people just because they have problems understanding things rather than actually offering help, or maybe choosing the alternative of saying nothing. I guess it was correct.
In the midst of comparing a service which turns out to be a nightmare to use for some people with another service which may not be as fancy as this one but by god at least you get a result and fast (maybe theres a lesson to be learned there), keep in mind that technology is supposed to help people, not present obstacle after obstacle and then add insult to injury by charging.
See how i used your idea and adapted it? Thats an example of the kind of witty content that i plan to write on my site. As soon as i can get it going, that is. Its day 2 and i have a page. Maybe by the end of today ill have a layout.
(Dont take any of what i just said personally, ellaella, it was just random thoughts. I think)

I currently have several blogs on WordPress.com. But my main blog, on Blogger.com, draws 1,000 to 2,000 visitors per weekday and is starting to pull in a decent amount of advertising. I would switch to WordPress.com in a heartbeat if I could run ads. There have been some indications that it’s being considered. Any news?
-
Nothing new for about a year as far as I know, except the Ad-FREE upgrade, which allows you to remove the Adsense that WP itself runs on the ads.
If you’re getting 1000-2000 readers per day on that blog (AND you have your own domain name which is portable) then what you should do is find a good web host and use WordPress.ORG software. Thanks to the instant upgrade and the one button install, it’s really quite painless now. Not all hosts provide a decent level of service, though, so do look around WordPress.org for recommendations.
I make a living off two blogs with fewer hits than that most days, and they’re WordPress.org. I wouldn’t wait around for WP.com, not when you could be using WordPress technology at a very reasonable price for hosting and making some decent cash.
