Advertising on WP.com Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I have read your points on not allowing advertising on WP.com blogs. However you also stated that sponsored posts are also not allowed – what is a sponsored post? How is that different from a paid-post? Does “sponsored post” mean that for example, a company gave you something for free and then you blogged about it?

    Thanks,
    Renee

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Yes

    – basically getting compensated in any way to write a Post / Page – could be in free goods / stuff or plain cash – is not allowed here

    Ah, OK. Thank you.

One last thing – because I work in the media (beauty and fashion industry), sometimes I get something for free (like makeup or something). What if, I like that makeup so much I wanted to blog about it; but the company has no idea about it, nor was I given that freebie in exchange for a blog post… I just wanted to write about it out of my own interest. Would that still be sponsored?

Just want to be clear because if that is considered a sponsored post, then I’ll just make sure whatever I write about, I bought myself.

    Thanks again!

Sorry – argh another question! Last one, promise.

If I upgrade my blog from WP.com to my buy my own domain, do those rules still apply?

    Thank you,
    Renee

yes the rules still apply as long as you are hosted on WordPress.COM – it is not the name but where you are hosted that determines what rules apply – domain mapping with a custom domain name still has you hosted here

Alright thank you! And what about my question about the domain question

    Thank you,
    Renee

He did answer that question: the domain makes no difference. You’re still hosted here.

If you want to do sponsored posts, go get a WordPress.org blog on paid hosting. It’ll be $120 a year or more for the hosting, but you can accept ads or whatever you like.

I answered you above – if you buy your own domain name but your blog is still here then you still can’t do Ads

Oh sorry – I meant the question above the domain question. The thing about what if my job kinda trickles into my blog, would that still be considered a sponsored post. I just want to be extra clear so I don’t break any rules.

Raincoaster – I don’t want to do sponsored posts or ads, I’ve been doing that on a WP.org blog for over 5 years, want to change to a free blog just for pleasure… but I want to ask and just want to make sure as I was not sure what “sponsored” means.

    Thank you,
    Renee

If you blog about things you got that you did not get on the understanding you’d blog about them, that’s cool.

“Sponsored” means that you wrote the blog post because you are beholden to someone for what they gave you: services, products, money, or consideration (eg you can’t blog about something if blogging about it is the condition to enter a contest).

Got it – thanks Raincoaster. Also thanks Auxclass for your help! Really appreciate it.
