Advertising query

My readers are complaining about the amount of ads on my site that are popping up all over it. I have seen these and some of the ads are a bit dubious too. My fellow blogger with a free wordpress site Lucinda Sans appears to have no adverts at all on hers – why is this – do you target some free sites more than others – I am losing readers because of the amount of ads appearing now that wasn’t a problem before.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi wherethejourneytakesme,

I’ve checked wherethejourneytakesme2.wordpress.com but haven’t been able to see an excessive number of ads. Ads are displayed on sites using our Free plan as this helps us continue offering free features:

    Ads on WordPress.com

It could be that your fellow blogger has a plan, which is why ads aren’t being displayed on their site.

If you think there may be an issue with the number of ads displayed, it would be great if you could make a screenshot and upload it to your Media Library so we can see the number appearing and where they are.

I have seen these and some of the ads are a bit dubious too.

If you see any dubious ads, they can be reported using the report this ad link underneath — this will send them to our ads team for review.

Thank you for your quick reply – as you have asked I have uploaded to the media library on my blog four screen shots typical of the ads including the pop up banner ad that pops up above the heading. They are littered throughout any of my posts but the example was taken from the recent post entitled – ‘dear diary :: catching up with life at home’. All my posts have a similar quantity of ads.

In addition when someone then clicks on the comments there are the same ads appearing throughout the comments.

Below is a recent comment from a blogger after I have asked my readers to comment on what they are seeing as of course when I am logged into my wordpress account I never see the ads.

“The ads on your blog don’t deter me from reading, but for your information there do seem to be a few. They put a couple of ads in between every few comments, a banner ad at the top and a couple at the end of the blog post. In all there are 7 as I’m writing this. Presumably the more comments you get the more ads there will be.” comment from Ann at Johnny Jumps Up blog on blogger.
If you view my blog you will be able to read all the different comments I have received – it would seem that some people see less and some quite a few.

The ads this morning were advertsing young girls working from home for money (dollars). This felt a little dubious to me advertising something like this and of course a lot of readers believe that the blogger whose site it is condones all these adverts that they are viewing. As the same ads do not always repeat throughout the day it is difficult to capture and report. Surely someone at WordPress is monitoring the ads displayed.

Can you please confirm that these adverts are all to do with WordPress advertising.

In respect of a fellow wordpress blogger who has no ads – she has now confirmed that 2 months ago she signed up for a paid plan however her site address remains as Lucindasans.wordpress.com and I thought with a paid plan you could have an address that did not have the ‘wordpress’ part included.

look forward to hearing fom you.

Whilst you’re waiting for a response from staff regarding your screenshots I’ll just mention that the cheapest way of removing ads is to upgrade to the Blogger plan. You don’t even need to change your current address if you don’t want to.

Ads vary depending on who is visiting your site and what state/country they are in. I visited your site and only saw a couple of “normal” ads. One below your first post, and one below the second post. Oh yeah, and the Banner ad, but that can be minimised by clicking the arrow top middle.

  • Hi there,

The banner ad at the top has been in use on free sites for over a year, and can be collapsed by clicking on the tab.

The ad appearing directly above the sharing buttons is the original ad slot for all sites on WordPress.com, so ads have been appearing there for as long as we’ve been displaying ads on free sites.

The other ads that appear between paragraphs are known as inline ads. Those are relatively new, but they’re also supposed to be there. How many of them show varies, depending both on the length and structure of your post, and on factors related to the person viewing the ad (the latter is what determines which advertisers bid on the available ad slots – if no one bids on inline ads, they don’t display.

So all the ads you’re seeing are supposed to be there, and are used to cover the cost to us of hosting your site for free. They can be removed via any of our paid plans.

If you feel the content/subject matter of any ad is inappropriate, please click the “Report this ad” link on the ad itself to report it. We serve thousands of ads across millions of sites a day, and no two people visiting your site sees the same ads. Additionally this process is completely automated, so reporting the ad directly that way is the only way it’s possible for us to review a specific ad.

In respect of a fellow wordpress blogger who has no ads – she has now confirmed that 2 months ago she signed up for a paid plan however her site address remains as Lucindasans.wordpress.com and I thought with a paid plan you could have an address that did not have the ‘wordpress’ part included.

It’s the owner of the site’s choice whether or not to replace the free WordPress.com address with a custom domain. Many are happy to stay on the free address, and we don’t force them to add a domain if they don’t want to.
