Advertising Saturation
-
Hi,
First up let me say “yes I understand there needs to be advertising on a Free Site” and “yes I understand by paying $72yr I can avoid this”.
Its just that the number of adverts seem to have got more and more intrusive with 4 to 5 ads on every page nowadays. My query:
1. WP quote “we sometimes display adverts on your blog” [unquote] – reality is always display surely ??
2. WP quote “It is possible for ads to appear in your browser that were not placed there by WordPress.com” [unquote] does this mean I may still see Ads after paying my $72 ?
3. One particularly annoying WP Ad resides in the RH Sidebar and remains stationary as the page is scrolled and thus appearing in every view, on every page – can anything be done about this positioning ?Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
1. WP quote “we sometimes display adverts on your blog” [unquote] – reality is always display surely ??
I visited your site and I see that we currently are displaying ads.
2. WP quote “It is possible for ads to appear in your browser that were not placed there by WordPress.com” [unquote] does this mean I may still see Ads after paying my $72 ?
If you read the next paragraph you’ll see that it says that “These ads are sometimes caused by malware or a virus, but more often it is due to a browser extension or toolbar that you may have installed in your browser.”
3. One particularly annoying WP Ad resides in the RH Sidebar and remains stationary as the page is scrolled and thus appearing in every view, on every page – can anything be done about this positioning ?
Can you please send us a screenshot of that so we can determine if it’s from us or some other program from your computer? You can use a tool like https://snag.gy/ to quickly grab a screenshot.

Hi fstat,
Thanks for your response.1. Yes I understand “malware/browser extensions” can cause some of these issues. However I believe I run a fairly clean/secure machine – e.g. I suspect all of these seen in the screen dump are WP related – not Malware/Browser Ext’s etc ? If you believe any of these in the screendump are not WP related please say.
2. Which brings us back to the Visual Intrusiveness on the pages and you can see here Screen Dump both the one permanently in the sidebar, plus the overall impact of the others.
Cheers

Hi, I see three ads there and they’re all typical ads, so those definitely aren’t malware.
You mentioned you’re getting 4-5 ads though. Can you send a screenshot of those?
And re: the annoyingness of the ad, sorry about that. Stickiness helps maximize the chances that the ad will get clicked and thus help cover the costs of hosting.
Noting too, it doesn’t cost $72 to remove ads. You can do it with a blogger plan if you’d like.

Hi Supernovia, thanks for your response.
I see three ads there
. . . .hmmm interesting – I see four in what I sent WP (with big red arrows pointing at them) !
Yep OK I get the overall picture now:
1. You have confirmed my suspicions they are not the result of malware.
2. You see less number of Ads than are actually there on the page.
3. You have confirmed “Stickiness” comes with the territory for Free Sites
4. Blogger Plan option duly noted thank you.All queries answered – please consider closed thankyou.

Oh, I see, I didn’t realize the big one was an advertisement. Was that after clicking on one of the other ads? The three (two on the bottom, one in the sidebar) are fairly normal. The big one is not.
Noting right now on your site I see just two ads at the bottom.

I find it interesting how WordPress avoids directly addressing the fact that their advertising business model is awful. I raised this issue in February and WP never even replied. (See here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/advertising-is-awful/)
Surely WP can find sources of advertising that do not involve click bait that is completely irrelevant to the topic of the blog. Or maybe we really are all in a race to the bottom.
