  After a long absence I looked at my blog today and found it covered in ads which had never been there before – how do I get rid of them?

  Hi there, all free-hosted WordPress.com websites have been displaying advertisements since around 2006 or so. This helps keep the “free” in free-hosted. Ads are usually only shown to logged out visitors and only on certain posts. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/
