Adverts have suddenly appeared on my site
-
I started this site <https://angusactivityprogramme.com> about 2 years ago and have been very happy with it until today when, for no apparent reason large adverts have appeared which completely distort the layout of the pages. Why have they suddenly appeared? And how do I get rid of them?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Could you please provide the exact URL where you see the adverts? The one you have provided above doesn’t lead anywhere.
Thank you.

Ads have been appearing on WordPress.COM sites since 2006.
Unless you purchase a Personal plan http://wordpress.com/pricing or a higher level Premium or Business Plan there will be ads placed by WordPress.COM on your site.
If the ads you see are found at the end of blog posts then provided you see this small About These Ads link then what you are seeing is WordPress.com generated advertising. http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

I cannot see what you refer to. Will you please provide an example for Staff?
Screenshots can be very helpful. You can use http://snag.gy/ or http://cloudup.com to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

There have been many threads about this over the last week or two. As @timethief says, adverts have been appearing on numerous free sites for years. The only recent change is that adverts now seem to be placed on virtually every free site. Also the ads team have been experimenting with different positions for the adverts. As well as two adverts beneath posts they seem to currently favour displaying a long advert at the very top of sidebars. Upgrading to a paid plan (or perhaps even removing the sidebar ??) seems to be the only solution to remove this particularly intrusive advert from your site.

Hi
I’m not very computer literate and this is the first time I’ve posted so please forgive me if I’m not doing things properly. Below is a screen grab showing one of the offending adverts –

Although @timethief asked for a screenshot, it isn’t really necessary. Anyone can visit https://angusactivityprogramme.wordpress.com/ whilst logged out of WordPress.com and see the adverts. My site, and most others on the free plan are similarly affected.

Thank you all for your responses – it looks like we will have to pay to have an ad free site. It just seems strange that it was okay until a couple of days ago. This site is for a local community group and the problem now is that if we have to pay then the site address will change to .org and all our leaflets, posters etc. will have the wrong website address. If it were possible to keep the .com address then we would be happy to pay the annual fee.

If you purchase the Personal plan just to remove the adverts I’m not sure that you HAVE to use the domain credit added to your account if you don’t require it. I believe you could keep the wordpress.com address. (But I have added a modlook tag to ask if a member of staff could confirm this.) Even if you did set up a custom domain with just .com at the end without the “wordpress” part anyone typing in the original long address would be diverted to the new address automatically.

Hi there,
Upgrading to a plan doesn’t automatically change your site address. It’s perfectly fine to keep using the free WordPress.com URL if you prefer. The address will only change to a custom domain if you register one.

Very many thanks for your advice and information. It would appear that I’ve nothing to worry about!
