Advice

Hi, I am on the Free Plan but considering upgrading to the Premium plan, however I have many questions about this service that I need to know before I commit…

    These questions are…
    1. Does the Premium plan include the Motif theme or would I need to change to a block using theme?
    2. What happens if I choose to return to a Free plan after a year or month? Will my site return to the same theme and look before I did this? What will happen to the posts I published that year?
    3. If I find this is an unsuitable option within 30 days refund period, will my site return to the same look and theme it has now?
    4. Is it possible to get further advice regarding this…

The site I have at present is: https://weegiemidget.wordpress.com/

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hello! 👋🏼

    We’re glad you’re considering upgrading to a WordPress.com Premium plan! 😊

Does the Premium plan include the Motif theme or would I need to change to a block using theme?

The Motif theme is a retired theme. This means that it’s not possible to use it for new sites (apart from the sites which were using it before it was retired) — However, given that you’re currently using it on your site, you can still use it if you upgrade to a Premium plan

You can learn more about the retired themes here:

In this case, all the Premium plan-related features will be removed from the site (e.g., access to the premium themes, custom CSS code, etc.)

Your site content will remain as-is after the downgrade, though ✅

If I find this is an unsuitable option within 30 days refund period, will my site return to the same look and theme it has now?

The refund period for all annual plans is 14 days after the purchase, as you can see here:

Once the plan is removed from the site, all plan-related features are removed as well, but you can still use any available themes with the free plan (including the Motif theme, which you currently use).

    But of course!

I can suggest giving the Premium plan a try for two weeks — if you don’t find it useful, you are welcome to cancel it and get a refund, as explained above.

With the Premium plan, you would get access to our Live Chat support, with the 24/5 availability of our Happiness Engineers 😊 Ads are also removed from the site.

Furthermore, you can monetize your site by signing up for the WordAds, where you can include our partners’ ads. To learn more about this, please check the following resource:

Thanks for your advice, it’s good to know I can still use Motif as I really like the theme. If I decide to change to a premium theme, if I change back to the unpaid version would it go back to the Motif theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

@weegiemidget, in most cases, yes, it will switch back to the theme you were using prior to the addition of the plan, but if it does not, you can go to Appearance > Themes and search for Motif and activate it again. In some instances, you may have to do a bit of configuration, such as setting a home page under Appearance > Customize, or perhaps activating the correct menu, but typically not much more than that.

@thesacredpath I was under the impression that once a user switched away from a retired theme that they couldn’t go back to it. Are you saying this is not the case?

  • Hey @bookstooge,

It’s really addressed on a theme by theme, site by site status.

Generally speaking – we can help to restore a retired theme if it’s in best interest to do so, but it’s heavily caveated with the expectation that, whatever issue there may be, there’s unlikely to be a fix… so there’s also an interest to change themes for the sake of future proofing the site.

    I hope this helps.

One of two more question, what happens to the posts and pages that I publish in premium before changing back to the free site will they be still valid but redirected to my site… ? Also would there be an option to buy the new theme if I change to a premium theme then? Is there more options for those with and without blocks than are currently seen on the free site? thanks for your help so far…

    Hi there!

We can definitely clarify this :)

what happens to the posts and pages that I publish in premium before changing back to the free site will they be still valid but redirected to my site… ?

If you upgrade to a Premium plan, create pages and posts, and then downgrade back to a free plan, that content will not be lost. They may be formatted a little differently, but the written content will remain as it is, and will be accessible via your base weegiemidget.wordpress.com address.

Also would there be an option to buy the new theme if I change to a premium theme then?

Absolutely! If you use the free plan, you have the option to purchase the premium themes from the WordPress.com theme gallery here: https://wordpress.com/themes/premium/ for a one-time fee.

Is there more options for those with and without blocks than are currently seen on the free site?

Could you clarify this a little more? All of the new themes in the WordPress.com gallery are designed to work with the block editor. If you’re looking to use our older editor, often that would mean picking an older theme which may no longer be supported.

    Hi again!

I am using Motif theme, but if I change to a theme using blocks would my pages change to this format if I used a block friendly theme…

Yes, that’s right :) once you switch to a block theme, your pages and post editors will switch to a block editing format. At the very least, we do advise that you switch to the block editor and our newer themes, as those provide the most seamless editing experience for your content!

We have some great guidance on using the block editor to control the layout of your content right here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
