Advice on simple free theme [allowing article background color and font color]
-
Hello,
I am a complete beginner, so please excuse me if this question seems obvious.
I am trying to find a simple free theme for a poetry blog I am trying to make, that allows me to have:1) One simple title in big characters (possibly with the ability to choose the font color and the background) (no decorations needed)
2) Choose the backtround color of the articles and the of the fonts therein contained (I would like to do deep blue background)
3) Allow me to have in the front page an index to all the various poetry collections and a section with the most recent poems.
Thank you very much for your kind advice
p.s. I know a little of the very basic html and css commands but I am not too sure on how to use them on a free wordpress.com blog.

One theme that I found to be really beautiful and simple was the Penscratch theme. It is an incredibly clean layout. That you can have a simple big title, poetry would stand out beautifully. https://wordpress.com/themes/penscratch/
Once you have activated the theme on your blog you would be able to change the overall background color (not the color of the post background). For ease of readability it’s best to keep the background white with a dark text.
You can create an index of all your poetry by creating a menu at the top. You can create multiple menus for the different poetry collections. Here is an explanation on how to create menus on your blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ As you write your poetry you can have them automatically load into the different menus by applying categories.
On your front landing page you can attribute featured images that you feel reflect your poetry or you could just have the title appear. (Personally I always like beautiful scenery that can relate to the poem, but that is my personal opinion). If you are interested in creating featured images for your posts, here is a how to http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/.
To gain access to the html and css code, you would have to upgrade to the premium theme. Once you have upgraded you would be able to change the font color and the background color to the posts.
Of course this is all a matter of opinion. You can test out different themes to see which one you like best. But you can apply all of these different customizations that I have told you about to many different themes. If you have questions about how to set things up you can click through the wordpress support pages http://en.support.wordpress.com . It is a great resource and this is a wonderful community to reach out to.
Best of luck in your endeavors!

1) you cannot choose the title font colour without the Custom Design upgrade except in a couple of instances.
2) You can do this by hand-coding the HTML in each post, if your coding skills are up to it. Or buy buying the Custom Design upgrade, again.

Thank you so much for your kind answers.
Penscratch looks very nice and I will try it right away.
Thank you also for the menu and the custom image links. As for the background color, for the posts where I need it, I will try the
<div> style="line-height:120%;text-align:justify;text-indent:1.5em;font-size:14pt;font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;color:#000000;background-color:#ffffff;border:1px solid blue;padding:15px;"> Paragraph one. Paragraph two. </div>that I have found here.
All the best.
