I was just wondering if I can add an affiliate link to my blog?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Again, not without getting your blog suspended.
WordPress.ORG is optimized for ecommerce, affiliates, and ads. WordPress.COM is not; it’s optimized for straightforward blogging. You can sell things you make yourself via a WP.com blog, but it isn’t easy; you can only use the Donation button from Paypal, which actually violates Paypal’s terms of use.

If you care about making money then head for WordPress.org where you can get a free install, hire a web host and keep all advetrising income. Here you split adverting income 50% 50% with WordPress.com. There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com and it’s for blogs on their own domains. This is the homepage for the WordAds program: http://www.wordads.co/ There you will find the application page as well as FAQs.

http://wordpress.com/apply-for-wordadsAside from a blog being accepted into WordAds, no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.com
If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thank you, still new to all this, I’m not just interested in money I just wanted to know where I stand

Is this still true?
There are exceptions to this policy. Amazon.com and other select affiliate links are permitted so long as they are not the primary content of the blog in question. Other exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis.

And does that mean that I can put the Amazon affiliate link in a widget, or may I only use it when linking to a reviewed or cited book? Or is it totally verboten and the support document incorrect?

There are exceptions. No, I believe no widgets are allowed as they are always displayed. But you may link to it in the text of a post. But in my experience, sometimes the links fail anyway.

See here for the only exceptions:
Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. Here is a thread in the support forums that talks more about which affiliate links are OK or not OK. http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
