Affiliate links – clarification re images

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m interested to dip a toe into affiliate links. I’ve read the Support page at: https://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/ but can’t find any more detail.
I love WordPress so am keen not to upset its engineers. I understand that affiliate links must relate to content, but how closely? For example if I post about supermarkets’ dodgy practices, can I append a link to what I consider an ethical alternative? If I post about waste reduction can I link to a social enterprise selling used books? If I post about hormone-disrupting chemicals, can I link to a retailer of beauty products that are free from such chemicals?
Please could you also clarify what is meant by “banner image”? Does this include an image of a company logo or a product? i.e. should link tags be text only? Or is there a dimension limit?
    Many thanks for any guidance.

    Hi there,

For example if I post about supermarkets’ dodgy practices, can I append a link to what I consider an ethical alternative?

Yes that sounds relevant, so it should be fine.

If I post about waste reduction can I link to a social enterprise selling used books?

Yes this sounds relevant as well.

If I post about hormone-disrupting chemicals, can I link to a retailer of beauty products that are free from such chemicals?

    Yes, this sounds relevant.

Please could you also clarify what is meant by “banner image”?

If you trying to use ads in your sidebar or header to make monetary gains then that would go against our TOS. Take a look at this for more information:

It’s my understanding, and staff have reiterated many times, that there can be no affiliate image links, not even in the content, not even if they are relevant. Text links are okay.

For instance this post: The image is not an affiliate link, but the title of the book being reviewed IS an affiliate link: http://thecryptosphere.com/2015/03/09/spam-is-a-numbers-game-brian-krebs-on-unsollicited-email/

gracejiyoung – many thanks for the advice. I will try some relevant text links.

raincoaster – many thanks also for clarifying about image links; I will avoid these altogether. I get that a product image (unlinked) is OK where relevant; is a company logo image, provided it’s unlinked and relevant and right beside the text link, is OK?

kokkieh – thank you for flagging this!

    Sorry – horrible grammar! Corrected:
“Is a company logo image OK, provided it’s unlinked and relevant and right beside a text link?”

“Is a company logo image OK, provided it’s unlinked and relevant and right beside a text link?”

If it’s your company logo that is fine.

It wouldn’t be my company so that’s a nop. Thank you again for clarifying.
