Affiliate programs
-
I got an email today asking if I wanted to join in their affilate program. Is that allowed here at WordPress? I emailed them back asking if the code is javascript or html or if they wanted me to make a clickable image. But it’s not pornographic or anything like that. It’s family friendly. And I’ve also seen this same affiliate on other sites that are on my blogroll. Just wanted to know if it’s allowed. Thanks!

You can affiliate with anybody, just look at my blog. I got about 16 affiliates it doesent matter.

Okay. I just wanted to make sure so my blog won’t be deleted or something. She emailed me back and said it’s html code. And I emailed someone on my blogroll and asked her if it’s legitimate and she said yes.

We still haven’t gotten back an offical response from staff on this one but it appears that affilated programs are allowed as long as 1) They’re not javascript based, 2) They’re just a link and 3) Being in the program is not the main purpose of your blog. I gave an example of a record review blog site that we have here a few weeks ago where the blogger reviews an album and provides a link to where they can buy it that includes an affliate link.

I asked another person from my blogroll who also has that affiliate and she said it’s legitimate.
Being in the program is not the main purpose of your blog.
Starting with my old blog, I’ve been doing this for almost a year and I want to be the next big celebrity blogger. lol So the purpose of my blog is for my own ego. :)

I just would like a once and for all answer to this one from staff. It’s come up a few times int eh past and we’ve not heard anyting offically. Granted splogs are a no-no but what about affliate links for those blogs were there is real content?

Help. I am trying to put a link to amazon.com on my Regulus Theme sidebar. How do I do it?…in layman’s terms, please. I am a newbie and trying to get my head around the coding and structure.
Thanks

Dr. Mike,
Thanks for your easy to understand instructions.I tried the bookmark suggestion:
1. Opened up the add a bookmark
2. Added the amazon.com htlm code – in the url section
3. Saved/added a bookmarkNow amazon.com appears on my blogroll, however it is not a live link and the graphics do not appear.
Any suggestions on fixing this?
BTW – I use firefox – is this an issue?Best,

Greets:
That’s because you’re using an iframe tag. It’s asking for a URL and a URL is an address, not HTML code which is what an iframe is.
Try putting just information you have under the src bit of the link into the URL line and see if that works.

Dr. Mike,
I am becoming your number one fan…I am still having problems with this setup. In the add a bookmark section, I put in the url and then in the image section I included the image information…still the image is not showing. I also tried adding a blogarama button in the same manner. The text is showing but not the button.
Help!!…as a newbie sometimes seeing is believing – can you point me to a site with a page layout demo/sample with the proper coding…maybe this will help me to visualize exactly what I am doing wrong**BTW I am using the Regulus theme on a wordpress hosted blog.
Thanks so much

Check to see if “Visible” is selected. I don’t know what the “Target” thing means, so I just leave it alone. And make sure that you click which catagory you want the bookmark to go in if you have more than one catagory:

I don’t know when drmike will be back but check out the Faq at the top thread in this forum to see if anything there might help too.

Target is where you want the link to open. _blank is a new window. _top is a new window on top of the old one.
stratbiz, You’re putting too much information in the Add Link form. A URL is just the web address, not the
<a href="stuff. For example, the URL for blogarama is the following:
http: //www.blogarama.comNote, that I’ve got to put a space in there to get it to show up here.
It looks like you put in the whole link instead of just the URL. Ditto for the image URL.
Hope this helps,
-drmike
