After buying domain, now get Invalid Key [6]

  • Unknown's avatar

I set up a WordPress blog (keepcranepointnatural.wordpress.com) last Friday, October 21. Everything was working well.

Then I bought the domain name yesterday, Wednesday, October 26 at about 3:30 PM (keepcranepointnatural.com)

I never received an email confirmation of this upgrade (I chose the $17, plus $8 privacy upgrade).
But PayPal did send an email with the payment confirmation at 3:50 PM.

After the name change, I could not view the site.

I realized that it would take time for the new name to propagate the networks.
But it’s now been 27 hours. My friends seem to be able to view the site.

If I log into WordPress as administrator of my blog, I can edit pages, and do other updates, but then when I try to view the whole site I get Invalid key [6]. Back

Is this perhaps because my ISP (Hughes Satellite) keeps old pages in cache?

If I log out, then key my site name, keepcranepointnatural.com the site comes up perfectly.
If I try to log in from the home page, I get Invalid key [6]

So it seems that I can view my site, keepcranepointnatural.com, only when I am logged out.

Now I’m wondering if this has nothing to do with Hughes not clearing its cache.

    Another strange thing:
Before I bought the domain, I got emails requesting approval for comments people were making on the blog.
After I bought the domain, I saw that a comment had been added, at 5:42 PM, without my approval. I did get an informational email stating that a comment had been added.
Then later, at 7:17 PM I received an email asking approval of a comment, as before I bought the domain name.
    What happened there?

I would appreciate help on this.
    Thanks, Anne

It can take 24 to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet.

You will probably be the last one to see the new site, you site loads fine for myself and your friends. You can have caching issues with your ISP and your own browser – try clearing your browser & computer cache.

Thanks very much auxclass. I hope this turns out to be the case.

However, I’ve searched “Invalid Key” and found that others are having this problem.
There’s a very long explanation by mdawaffe, staff, on 9/21, under the topic “domain mapping causes invalid key error message.”

He says that it’s a problem with a satellite ISP. I do have Hughes Satellite.

As it is now, I can’t, for example, write a post, insert a photo, then preview before publishing. Clicking preview gives me Invalid key [6]
So essentially, I can’t edit my blog.

He says there’s no fix yet. If that’s true, I will have to go back to the original keepcranepointnatural.wordpress.com.

I hope I can contact someone when “support” is available again on October 29.

I would have a serious chat with your ISP since it sounds like it is a problem with their equipment, not sure what the staff can do but I will flag this for their attention as they do monitor the forums and perhaps a call from WordPress.COM might help your ISP get motivated to fix their problem.

Thanks again auxclass. Read the post “domain mapping causes invalid key error message” for Hughes Satellite’s role in the problem.

How do you flag for staff’s attention? I would appreciate if you could.

I tested the problem by using a dial-up account we’ve kept for emergencies. (We’re out in the woods, so satellite is our only high-speed option.)

Logged in, using the dial-up connection, I can edit and do everything, preview, publish, etc. So this does give credence to the satellite problem theory.

Very bad if this is true. It took me more than an hour to write one post and wrestle two photos into it. I could make a cup of tea, and drink it, while waiting for a page to change. So I’m not going back to the dark ages of connections.

I might just have to undo, and go back to the wordpress.com name.

    Thanks for your help
    Anne

One way to write Posts easiter is on your PC – use Windows Live Writer if you have Windows (free) or Ecto (I think that is the name if you are on a Mac – not free but seems the cost is $ 20 or so)

I use Windows Live Writer then upload the finished version – preview online then publish – at least then you can have lunch while the whole Post is being uploaded.

I am experiencing the same – very frustrating – problem as keepcranepointnatural. My circumstances are exactly the same with a Hughes satellite system. I am ready to tear my hair out. Can anyone help. My blog is muskokaleaks.com Thanks

Sorry to hear that. It is indeed very frustrating. When I saw your message, I was going to report that your problem would probably clear up when Hughes finally cleared its cache (as suggested in one of the posts here), because yesterday, at 2PM, my problem cleared up! I could be logged in, and add, change, preview, view, everything.

However, I logged in and tried to view my blog, this morning. I’m back to Invalid key [6]
Is it Hughes Satellite’s cache problem?
Why did it work yesterday, then not work today? Last night I quit Firefox, and shut down my Mac. Did this trigger something when I reconnected to Hughes this morning?
I’m hoping someone from tech support can help us on this.
(I can’t view your blog either while I’m logged in to WP.)

I am also having this problem when logged in on a Hughesnet connection. I swear, once I finally badger Verizon or Comcast into expanding to my area, I’m gonna take a 10lb sledge to this equipment, soak it in lighter fluid and send pictures to customer service.

Did the problem begin when you bought your domain name, i.e., took “wordpress” out of the domain name?

For how long have you had this problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

I prefer “wordpress” in my link, so I did not buy the domain name.
My ISP is Hughesnet, and I love and appreciate their excellent service.
However, several days ago, I stopped receiving gmail alerts of new posts and comments, AND when using “Read Blogs” I’m getting Invalid key [6].
Have searched HELP to no avail.
Will mark this post to “notify me of followup posts via email” to see if it works from this page. Sorry, my technical savvy is sorely inadequate.

I reported this problem to “support.” I have had several responses from them, first asking me to clear all cache, and clear all cookies.
I did that, but still get Invalid key [6]
The last message I got from support asked if I had contacted Hughes Satellite yet!
I’m not sure how to approach that. I don’t know what to do.
It would be nice if WordPress could program a fix to this problem, which others are having as well.
Maybe you should report your problem to support directly.

To all those whose ISP is Hughes Satellite:
Call Hughes support and describe the problem.
I called this morning, and a very helpful tech support person, Jeff, finally figured it out.

He changed my “Turbopage” setting to “disable.”

The explanation is that by having the turbopage setting disabled, the request (your clicking on your purchased domain name) returns a refreshed page, instead of a cached page.

This seems to have eliminated the Invalid key [6] problem for me !
