After domain expires, how do I migrate back to wordpress.com site?

My domain (purchased elsewhere, not through WP) will soon expire and I was wondering what I have to do, in order to migrate all of the content back to the original name.wordpress.com website? At this moment I do not plan to renew the domain, so I would appreciate any advice. :)

  • Hi there,

So you have a domain mapping upgrade here? I have to ask, as the account you’re using to post here does not own any sites at all.

If a domain or domain mapping upgrade on any WordPress.com site expires, the site just goes back to using the free WordPress.com address. You will also need to cancel the domain mapping upgrade once the domain itself expires or you will get an error message on the page.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. :) I’m a complete rookie and I’m gonna try and respond as well as possible. :)

Created a website on WP, had a company get us a domain and set it up. In the process they changed my username so I can’t use the old one, for some reason.

How do I cancel domain mapping upgrade? I would like my readers to be able to still access the content, of course, so thanks again. :)

  • Hi @zdraviln, I hope you don’t mind me jumping in to help.

To cancel a domain mapping upgrade, log in as the user who owns the upgrade, then cancel it here:
    https://wordpress.com/purchases

You should be able to log in using the email address that got the reciept for the upgrade.

I’m very sorry for the late reply, I have been traveling.

I managed to sign in with both of the two accounts and under no username is there any upgrade shown. I am mostly worried about losing my content. Is there anything you can help me with that I can do, to prevent that?

    Thanks so much!

  • If you’ll let us know the domain, we’ll try to get in touch via the email address on its account.
