After first edit and save, editor only shows ‘Hello World’
-
Hi there,
I’ve just created and saved changes to a new homepage. When I click ‘visit site,’ I can see all of my content and changes I made. But when I click ‘edit,’ I see only the default ‘Hello World’ starter page. This is reproduceable on both Chrome and Firefox. I have not enabled any plugins.
Could you tell me how I might go about regaining access to existing content in the editor?
Thanks,

Have you published your new homepage? Perhaps it will display once you launch your site.

Thanks for the reply. The problem began while I was on Peacock, but persists across theme changes (currently on Twenty Twenty-One).

Hi all, new problem. I’ve come back to try another theme but now it seems the previous content no longer exists (both editor and viewer now display the “Hello World” default content).
I’ll keep this open as I rebuild and see if the problem persists. Thanks for your help so far.

Hello there,
I’m seeing content/blog posts on the homepage here: https://trombospace.wordpress.com/
“Hello World” is a default starter post, and this can be removed here: https://trombospace.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php
Also, to check, are you making changes in the site editor but not seeing them?

Changing theme may introduce a new Home page but your earlier page will still be in your dashboard. Note I can’t see your site because it still hasn’t been launched.

Thanks for having a look! Yes things now appear back to normal. Since taking action in the newly blanked editor I have been able to make changes, have them saved, and view them both properly in the editor as well as the site. The editor content (which originally included posts, images, and a tiled gallery) is no longer lost after visiting preview.
For posterity, the original problem arose before I had changed any themes. I changed themes after the problem presented itself to see if those themes would be reflected in either the editor or the page. While no changes were reflected on the site (which continued to show the same posts, images, and tiled gallery) ,the editor was always blanked when I came back to it.
I can no longer reproduce this on any of my browsers, and everything now seems to be working as expected. I will mark this as resolved and for anyone reading this in the future, all I can say is an unhelpful “wait a day.”
Cheers all.

That’s right yeah, I tried Firefox, Edge, and Chrome and had blips with all of them. I haven’t gone back to Edge and Firefox yet but Chrome has been business as usual.

Hi again,
Looks like I’m seeing this problem again on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.
When I preview my site, it looks exactly like I left it. But when I open the editor, it presents a hodgepodge of current and old content, mostly old stuff, and current elements which are displayed on the page preview are not present in the editor. The formatting is also garbled.
I have refrained from saving any edits in the editor because doing so is how I lost everything when this problem first presented itself. If a staff member is able to compare the editor and the preview for me and report what they see that would be greatly appreciated.

Eureka!
This may be a typical beginner mistake or something that can be made clearer in the UI, but I have the answer.
When I select my page from just under “My Site” in the top left, and then hit the edit button from the resulting preview, I am taken to the garbled and inaccurate editor.
When I select Appearance and then the Editor (Beta) option, everything displays as intended in the editor.
Marking as resolved. Thanks for reading.
