After I purchase a domain name, then what?

I want to purchase a domain name through wordpress. It says that it’s $18. Once I register and pay the fee, what do I need to do? Anything? When someone tries to go to coordinatedkate.wordpress.com will it still lead to my new domain http://www.coordinatedkate.com? or vise versa? If I need to do something else will someone give me the idiot proof step by step guide? Thanks so much!

You will want to go to the Domains page of your dashboard and set your new URL as Primary, that’s all. Everything else is automatic.

So it doesn’t matter if someone types in coordinatedkate.wordpress.com or coordinatedkate.com, it will take you to the same place?

That’s right. But if you set coordinatedkate.com as primary, that is what will show up in the browser bar. You may also want to ask people who’ve blogrolled you to change to the new URL.

I just registered a domain and made it my primary domain in settings but when I go to http://www.coordinatedkate.come it doesn’t show up! Is there like some kind of grace period?

Up to 72 hours for the DNS propagation to settle down.
