After importing Blogger, Media folder has 2x every image

I imported my Blogger to WordPress.com and now I have 2x every image in my Media folder – taking up presumably twice the space. Each pair of images is the same size with different codes added at the start of the file name. How do I get rid of all the duplicates? I don’t know which of the two is actually being used in the posts.

  • Hi there,

I’ve visited the media library on your site and I can see that there are multiples of some images, but not all of them. Have you been deleting some of the duplicates?

It’s not clear why they are being duplicated and usually in this situation we would offer to reset your site and start the import over again to see if you only get single images. This can be a bit tricky since Blogger does not specifically provide an “export file “or WordPress” but they are careful to call it a “backup file” used for restoring content on Blogger.

We do our best to take that file and turn it into something that WordPress can understand, but it can be the case that mistakes will happen from time to time.

However, if I can make a suggestion, the import (even with some doubled images) has only used 2% of your storage space. It will take you many years to fill this space, so the dupes you have now contribute a very small amount to that. I would just not worry about it and keep moving forward. ;)

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I don’t want to reimport because WordPress added a slash in front of every apostrophe and I’ve had to go in and manually delete them all. I’m not doing that again!
The ones that aren’t duplicated are for the posts I made since doing the import.
For some time my storage space was reading about one third full – I don’t know why, and then it changed to 2% a while later – so at the time I was worried about running out of space. I guess I’ll leave it.
Is there a way of finding out which images have not been used in any posts, so I can delete those? It’s hard to find stuff when there’s so much there.

  • There’s a way to see unattached files in your Media Library (for that, you’ll need to change the Dashboard Appearance in the Account Settings), but when I tried it on your site, it looks like none of the imported images are actually attached. That’s said, I’m afraid there’s no quick way to see which ones are being used.

As staff-totoro mentioned above, imports from other platforms can be tricky sometimes :/

Half the pictures are definitely attached! – in that they appear on the site or in posts. How do you see unattached images in the Dashboard Appearance? I don’t see anything in there that seems relevant.

  • Whether or not an image appears in a post has nothing to do with whether or not it’s attached. In WordPress, image attachment refers to a piece of meta-data connected to the image in the media library, connecting the image to a specific post in the database.

So checking for unattached images won’t actually help here – an image can be used in a post, while still being unattached.

In other words, the only way to see which images are being used and which not is to check them one by one.
