After my domain forwarding, the URL doesn't change
-
I am trying complete the process of mapping our personal domain name to our blog.
I repurchased a domain through NAME.com and a Site Redirect through the WordPress.com online store. I completed the forwarding process as as outlined by both. The forwarding works, but some things are squirrely.
The domain name never changes in the URL line on my browser. When I go from one post or page to another within our blog, the url on my browser always stays the same – there are no folder extensions in the URL.
For example:
I put into the browser bar: williamsfamilylife.org and hit ENTER
I am sent to the home page of our blog (scottandelliedotcom.wordpress.com), and the URL bar displays —– williamsfamilylife.org.
I click the CONTACT US tab just below the blog banner and I’m sent to that page, but the URL bar displays —– williamsfamilylife.org.
I click on the HOME tab and I’m sent to the home page, but the URL bar displays —– williamsfamilylife.org.
I click the title of the most recent blog post (The power of praise – good and bad), and my browser takes me to that blog post, but the URL bar displays —– williamsfamilylife.org
I click the PERMALINK hyperlink at the bottom of the blog post, and my browser takes me to that same post, but the URL bar displays —– williamsfamilylife.org.
HOWEVER
I click on the Facebook share button at the bottom of the blog post, and it does share the post to my Facebook wall. BUT when I go to my wall and click on the link, I go to that post on my blog, but now the URL bar displays http://scottandelliedotcom.wordpress.com/2013/11/22/the-power-of-praise-good-and-bad/.
I click from there on the HOME tab below the blog banner, but the URL bar displays —– http://scottandelliedotcom.wordpress.com/Are there some processes I need to complete with NAME.com or WORDPRESS.com to get the proper URL to appear in the browser address bar?
Thank you for your help.

So, just to make sure we are on the same page, you want to use the domain williamsfamilylife.org with your WordPress.com site scottandelliedotcom.wordpress.com, correct?
-
-
Okay, so the good news is that this is easy to fix.
You just got your upgrades a bit mixed up. What you want to have is Domain Mapping. That allows you to use your WordPress.com site with a domain name that is registered elsewhere. Site Redirect is really more for people who are leaving WordPress.com (or closing a blog) and want to point visitors to their old site to a new site that they have started.
So, you can either log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard and go to Store–>My Upgrades and cancel Site Redirect and then purchase Domain Mapping. Or I can just do it for you if you are feeling a little unsure on the whole thing.
Just let me know.
-
I tried to do it myself and ran into problems. I cancelled the Site Redirect, but when I tried to confirm it from the auto notification email, it gave me the message “An error occurred while refunding your upgrade. Please contact support.”
If you could handle it, that would be great. Let me know what I need to do next.
Thank you.

It looks like that cancellation went through as I am seeing no upgrades on your account and am seeing that the refund was processed.
To add Domain Mapping, simply log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard, click on Store–>Domains, enter williamsfamilylife.org in the “add a domain” box and click the “add domain” button. Then simply follow the instructions that appear to map your domain.
Let me know if you have any trouble.

Just use williamsfamilylife.org.
WordPress.com doesn’t display www in the URL in any case.
-
It’s not working for me. I add williamsfamilylife.org in the “add a domain” box and click the “add domain” button, but get a notice at the top of the page: “This domain has already been mapped to a WordPress.com blog.”
I tried deleting the site redirect, which says it’s active until next November, but get the message “You do not have permission to delete redirects for this blog. Make sure you are logged in as the same user used to purchase the redirect. Please contact support for further help.” I am logged in properly.
-
Hmmm, this is very odd.
Okay, I have tried a couple things. Can you give it another try?
-
Thank you. I was able to register. Which radio button should I check as the primary? And will URLs read with our purchased domain, i.e. williamsfamilylife.org/contact-us?
-
If you set williamsfamilylife.org as your primary, then URLs will display in the williamsfamilylife.org/contact-us format.
-
Setting williamsfamilylife.org as the primary and testing both of the following two URLs:
- scottandelliedotcom.wordpress.com/contact-us/
- williamsfamilylife.org/contact-us/
I get the following results:
- Destination: http://williamsfamilylife.org//contact-us/ (notice the double slash before contact-us)
- Page Display: This webpage has a redirect loop.
What now?
-
So I am seeing a set of weird nameservers for your domain:
- NS2CVX.NAME.COM
- NS3SXZ.NAME.COM
- NS4GVX.NAME.COM
- NS1BCP.NAME.COM
Please go to your domain registrar’s site and log into the control panel. You will need to update the name servers as below:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
As described here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
If you have set up any redirect at your domain’s registrar, please undo it as this can cause weirdness such as you are seeing.
Let me know if you have any trouble.
