After post widget – unable to edit

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey! I have a copyright statement in a widget after my posts and now I need to edit the year to 2022. However, editing widgets has completely changed = become impossible. There is no edit button anywhere. I checked settings, blocks are enabled. I read your instructions but they say nothing about editing existing widgets. How can I edit it? Thanks.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Ok, it took me all evening, but I finally was able to find the legacy widgets and change the year.

Next widget problem: I added custom html to create a widget which I only want on my About page but it’s now everywhere, on every page and post. Apparently this html block doesn’t have any visibility preferences. After clicking on empty white space I managed to find those settings somewhere, saved them, and still the widget is on every page when I only want it on my About page. I’m losing my mind spending so much time on these tiny edits which I used to be able to do in 3
    minutes!

And now ALL my widgets disappeared, my whole site design is just emptied. Just like that!

    Please help!

  • Hi there,

Is the About page you refer to the one at https://thesnowmeltssomewhere.wordpress.com/about/? Which widget is the one you only want on that page?

And now ALL my widgets disappeared, my whole site design is just emptied.

I see four widgets in your site’s Primary Sidebar widget area, and those widgets are visible on the page as well. Can you tell me which widgets are missing?

I do notice a large number of widgets in the Inactive Widgets section. You’ll need to visit the Widgets page at https://thesnowmeltssomewhere.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php to view those. Are those perhaps your missing widgets?

If so, you can add them back to the correct widget area from there. Click on a widget (you can also hold Shift to select multiple widgets), then click on this icon in the widget toolbar to move it to another widget area:

Hi, thanks for answering :) Yes, all my widgets became inactive (legacy ones) and I spent a long while moving them back last night, clicked “update”, and still they disappeared again and again. I had carefully planned widgets (follow buttons, links to posts) in appropriate places all throughout the blog and now they are all gone. The widget editing area in my admin is completely blank, white, no preview and the buttons don’t really work. I’d attach a screenshot if I could, but it’s like poking around blind. Some other bloggers suggested my theme is too old and that I should try switching to a newer theme that supports block widgets.

  • You can use an online tool to upload a screenshot (such as https://snipboard.io/) and paste the link into your reply. That way, we can make sure we see the same :)

I spent a long while moving them back last night, clicked “update,” and still they disappeared again and again.

Do you mean that they keep disappearing from the Customizer or your site?

Some other bloggers suggested my theme is too old and that I should try switching to a newer theme that supports block widgets.

Your theme has been retired, which means that it is no longer maintained. If there’s any bug, it won’t be fixed, and it can cause issues with newer browsers, or WordPress updates. Because of that, it’s always better to use a more recent theme. However, we don’t know yet if what happens on your site is caused by your theme or if there’s some other underlying issue. So, if you’re open to changing your theme, go for it, but I can’t guarantee that this will solve the problem.

Hey, I changed my theme and it seems to be working now, though the theme isn’t exactly ideal otherwise but I don’t really have any more time to spend on this. So thanks, but it worked out this way.

(The widgets were not getting published on my site and the widget admin was not working at all. The theme had indeed been retired and I think that was the problem.)

After I just finished adding all my new widgets to my new site, they disapperead again and are now stuck in inactive widgets! How can this keep happening, especially since I saved them step by step? Is there a button I keep pressing to undo everything? “Move” does not move widgets and the widget admin area is still not working so I have to rebuild everything AGAIN in the customizer. I have kids and a job! :D I honestly can’t keep redoing these things over and over again, there is something very wrong with the widgets. I’m pretty close to deleting my 7-year-old blog.

When you’re in the Customizer, do you save your changes before you exit? Or, are you editing your widgets via wp-admin instead?

Also, can you let us know which widgets in your inactive widgets area are the ones you’re trying to re-establish and we can take a closer look?

    Thanks!

Thanks – I managed to fix it now in the Customizer. And yes, I saved everything repeatedly, that was not the problem. Better not touch the widget admin area now that everything is in place, I don’t want it to go beserk again.
