after shrinking images, used media storage percentage going up?

  • Unknown's avatar

after resizing/scaling my images to make them smaller in size, the percentage of my used media storage is going up, not down. I am shrinking images in my media library from 4000×3000 (4mb approx) to 1280×960 (300kb) but when i refresh my page it is showing that I have not saved any storage space. Am i now storing both files on my media server?

Uploading smaller images simply creates additional versions of the original image which is in your Media Library, unless you delete the original image. If you do delete the original image from your Media Library then everywhere you have embedded the original image will end up without the image displaying at all. There will be a 404 page not found error instead of an image.

I understand if i upload multliples of the same image, it would add to it. I am editing and resizing already uploaded images. In my media library it only shows the updated (smaller) image but my total usage keeps going up.

    Hi Clinton –

Is this still an issue? Sometimes it can take a little while for the % meter in the Media Library to adjust. Right now looking at your library you’re at 10% usage.

it appears to have corrected itself. I had assumed that because it updated so quickly when i added files, that it would update just as quickly when i removed/changed them. Thank you

helper-brucea – Do I understand correct that it is possible to resize/shrink images directly in our WPcom site’s Media Library and consequently regain storage space?

No, you would need to delete the previous upload after adding the resized version and then you would also need to carefully replace the image in your post with the new one after deleting the original or they will eventually appear as broken images (after the local cache for them expires).

It’s very tricky business to replace images in this way and you can cause things to break if you’re not careful, instead of doing that I would recommend just optimizing new images you upload or even just not worrying about the size if you are only using a small percentage of your free space.

@designsimply-Thanks for confirming what I thought I knew but the information given in this thread appeared to confuse the issue.
