Again: short code does not become a video in my post

A problem that I and others had last week, which was resolved, has now sprung up yet again. Which is to say:

I wanted to put a YouTube video into a new post. I copied the Share short link and pasted it into its own separate line in my new post.

I hit Published. When the page was published, all that showed up was the link to the video.

This did not happen last week but it is happening now. What has changed? By the way, I tried resorting to the old way and copied the long URL from the Address field at the top of the page, but the result was the same as using the short share code.

Can anyone solve this? It is so much more interesting to see the video screen than to see a plain old URL.

Strange, just tried on my test blog and no problem at all.

Of course you have enabled autoembed on the Settings>Media Dashboard? If so, perhaps there is a stray bit of errant code or somesuch on the same line as the link. Switch to the HTML Editor and make sure the YouTube URL is alone on its line.

And stranger still, looking again at your blog, the video is there. Problem solved?

Jennifer……… the oddest thing: After I wrote the post, I made a new post and put in a different YouTube video….. AND IT WORKED!

    Go figure!

I just now went back to the post with the offending problem and I re-did the process …. and it worked! And I changed nothing in the way I did it.

    Perplexing.

Such are the mysterious ways of the internet. :)

Thanks for your advice above to check Settings Media. Somehow I had a 600 entered under width, but nothing on height. This was preventing processing. What is the default size? I took 600 out, switched to html and a separate line, and it worked.

That is also strange because by default the width is usually left empty and 600 pixels is the height dimension.

justjennifer, your response was very helpful. You fill in well for a happiness engineer! I likely said my above comment backwards. It was the second box, which is indeed the height not width. Thanks though, because now I know it was a default and not my mistake. I still assume a lot that I did something wrong when anything online doesn’t work, but the more experience I get, the more I see that it is usually something just isn’t working. This comes after I re-read the information about 3 times — ha ha. There’s so much jargon in this stuff, I sometimes have no flippin clue what is being said.
