Akismet says it has prevented 10 spam comments. How does it know it’s spam and why can’t I see what they are? I would like to determine if they are spam or not for myself. Any ideas?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Dashboard >> Settings >> Discussion >> Safe: always put spam in the Spam folder for review.
Akismet almost never puts good stuff in the spam box – – since my site is getting over 600 spam comments a day – this is one setting I am not going to choose

Akismet is pretty good at determining if something is spam or not. In two years of blogging it’s only caught one legitimate comment on my site while protecting me from over 4000 spam comments. Keep in mind that over 80% of all comments on the web is spam.
The worst spam containing malware and viruses are deleted immediately, so you never get to see those. The rest go to your spam folder (depending on the setting auxclass pointed out). Those you can view by going to Comments on your dashboard and clicking the Spam tab at the top of the page.
Be careful approving comments in the spam folder, though. Human-generated spam often looks like real comments, but you can quickly tell if they’re genuine or not by looking carefully at what they say and by looking at their emails and website URLs.
