  I want to disable Akismet and go through the comments manually, how do I do this?

  You cannot disable Akismet on any wordpress.COM hosted site. You check your Akismet spam filter http://en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments/ every day and if you find a legitimate comment among the spam you approve it and the spam filter eventually “learns”. Also note that posting your email address on your blog makes it vulnerable to collection by email harvesting spam bots. The better choice is to use the contact form. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/
