Akismet allowing trackbacks to come thru

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ve had a heck of a time with trackbacks coming thru my blog over the last week or so. I deleted probably 20 or so this morning. I keep coming over here hoping that someone else is seeing this, but so far, nothing. What, if anything, can I do to stop this?

    Secondly, I’ve sent feedback asking that the guys here implement the WordPress plug-in that allows you to close comments automatically after a certain amount of time. If you guys think this is a good idea, please send similar feedback

    @vivian
    Are the trackbacks legitimate? I’m asking because it’s become a new spam technique.

    Also note that we did have the auto-delete for suspected spam comments on posts over 30 days old feature in the new Akismet upgrade, however, due to the protest of a vocal minority, it was “turned off”. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=7559&page=4&replies=121#post-92775

    engtech and I have both manually closed our comments on posts older than 30 days with great spam reduction results.

    I definitely agree with you. I want the auto-delete feature for comments suspected to be spam on posts over 30 old days back.

    I don’t know what you mean by “legitimate.” They contain horrible language.

    As for the posts over 30 days – I guess I missed that completely! I’m going to have to go back through each post manually and close the comments, huh? Not fun.

    @vivian
    They sound suspicious because they contain horrible language. I recall about 2 weeks ago someone else reporting on the forum that they were getting weird trackbacks that were a form of spam. And, I got some weird trackbacks on my environmental blog too.

    “Not fun” is a very mild way of expressing how I felt and still feel today about having to undertake the process of closing comments on old posts – one post at a time .

    Going back to the original question, were they from the same IP address or different ones? I noticed a bunch of “You have an interesting website” ones that made it into my moderation queue recently but they all had different IP addresses. I was assuming that we have another large series of trojaned boxes on the net.

    They were from different IPs. Had they all been the same, I would have just put the IP address in the block area. I wish these had ended up in the moderation queue instead of as comments on my blog.

    If I turn off pings, will that keep the trackbacks away?

    @Vivian
    -> Options -> Discussion
    Discussion Options
    Usual settings for an article:
    (These settings may be overridden for individual articles.)

    * Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)
    * Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)

    I think this is the place to make the change.

    It would but considering you would have to go back through and change every single post on your blog to do so, it would probably be more trouble in the long run. And it would also keep out the legit trackbacks as well.

    TT – I saw that but didn’t want an overall setting.

    drmike – In the write window, there is an option to turn off pings. That’s the one I was thinking of changing on the old posts. Since the only thing that is coming thru are trackbacks, I figured I’d leave the comments turned on but turn off the pings, assuming that kills the trackbacks.

    (What’s the difference between a pingback and a trackback, anyway?)

  • Unknown's avatar

    I *think* pingback is the action and trackback is the resulting comment. I never could get them straight in my head either. Especially considering it’s not a true “ping” as us internet oldtimers know of it.

    It’s ’em youngster web two dot o’ers who think they’re so special mucking things up for the rest of us yet again. :)

    So how do you tell the difference between a spam and a legitimate trackback? Lorelle on WordPress has just told me that she had two trackbacks to my blog which aren’t showing. I thought they were spam, because they appeared in my comments queue and looked exactly like comments which appear for moderation immediately after I post. So I deleted them!

    Heavy sigh. I know I’m useless at the technical side of blogging, but it looks like I’m really going to have to start studying this.
